Slipstream - Retrospective

Post by Laz69 »

I recently did a Q&A with Mark Refoy re: Slipstream for my wee corner of the internet. Discussing his musical background, Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized as well as his Slipstream years and life in general. If you fancy a wee read, you can find it at the link below.

https://thelazarusfilesblog.wordpress.com/

I also did a wee companion mix of Slipstream material from all their albums, a link to which can be found in the blog post above.

Enjoy!

Yes, thank you, that was a great read.

Mark seems like such a humble guy - this makes me want to check Slipstream out as I've never really heard them... I believe Veiko sent me a comp of their stuff years ago which will be in a box somewhere.

Liked the bit about Johnny Marr really liking Pure Phase :D

Did they mention if their last album - Out of the Blue - will ever get a physical release? The "cover" for the download looks ace, and would be great on a 12" sleeve.

Nothing in the pipeline Stevie; no interest shown by anyone. Mark quite happy to go down the digital route as long as he can keep putting his music out.

Out Of The Blue has an Anthony Ausgang designed cover and, yes, it would look cracking on a proper 12" sleeve

Great interview, Laz, thanks. Mark is one of the nicest people I've met, and certainly the most underappreciated talent. I'm glad he realised he was in the best band in the world at the time, because he was, and in no small part due to him.

Great read! Cheers, Laz! I only have the Transcendental album on CD. Enjoying your playlist, too.

Mark Refoy is in a new band, named Satellite Seven, with Chris Olley and Thighpaulsandra. Just received the email from the sixbyseven mailing list:

A New Band Is Born...

A while back we went to Rockfield.

Guitar maestro Mark Refoy joined me and Charlie and Thighpaulsandra for a weekend of recording.

In my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined what we came up with in such a short period of time.

Mark is an amazing guitarist, with a distinctive melodic style which sits somewhere between Johnny Marr and Michael Rother.

His guitar work on the first two Spiritualized albums is what makes them such awesome records.

Thighpaulsandra, who was also in Spiritualized and COIL added great sounds playing an Echoplex live and also synths and engineered and recorded the album in the same room that Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded, with the same desk that Wham! recorded Wake Me Up Before You GoGo on!

As usual, Charlies drumming was sublime and on the money, right from the start.

I produced and played bass and bits of guitar and vocals.

The result is a beautiful album that sounds the best it could.

It is difficult to describe the sound.

Tomorrow I will be playing Side A of the album on my Patreon.

On Saturday I will play Side B.

More news about a vinyl release and gigs to follow.

The name of the band is 'Satellite Seven'.

I’ve actually been approached to put this album out on vinyl. As with many micro labels, the one I run (Drone Rock Records) has been hit by a mixture of Brexit, an increase in manufacturing costs and customers simply not having the funds they once had to spend on luxuries like vinyl. Therefore I have to really be careful in picking the projects I’m working on. Being a massive Spacemen 3/Spiritualized fan I am super excited about working on it but it would also be nice to know the demand for something like this is actually there. I would only be doing a small run (250-300 copies) but even those kind of numbers are hard to sell in these times (the irony of vinyl now being added to the UKs list of products for the country ‘s inflation guide is not lost on me  ).

Would many of you be interested in getting a copy if I was to go ahead with it?

I hear you. Even a small run of 250-300 orders might be feasible, but like you had in mind this is Slipstream and they are a bit obscure to the general public. Good idea of gauging interest. Don't want to be stuck w/ leftover inventory collecting dust ...

Yes, I'd buy one if available in the UK. Love Slipstream and Mark Refroy.

Off topic, but it said on the radio last weekend that 50% of people who buy vinyl don't have a turntable! I guess it's collecters and people who hope it'll gain in price to sell later. Crazy stat though!

It’s a new project called Satellite Seven made up Chris from Six by Seven, Mark Refoy and Thighpaulsandra. See original post from Sunray further up the thread Sighs for full info.

Glad you asked - I was going to ask that myself, but then I thought to myself that I'd be wanting it regardless :)
