Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
one of my current faves The Dream Syndicate have announced tour dates, the only UK one is in London so considering making the trip down for that.
A Place To Bury Strangers end of April, they will have to go far to top their Liverpool Psych Fest set but we'll see.
also Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever in July, really enjoying their album as a slice of finely written guitar pop

Jon, Dream Syndicate, lets do that. But wait a bit to see if they add anymore dates. Scala is a big ish venue so worth hanging fire on

yep sounds sensible, I guess there's a chance that more dates will be added. definitely don't want to miss out on seeing them so pretty sure I'd be up for a London trip if it came to it though.Aquarian-Time wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 11:49 am Jon, Dream Syndicate, lets do that. The Damned @ the Chicago House of Blues- May 30th - very excited to see them with Paul Grey, who is my favorite of their bassists.
The Dream Academy & 11th Dream Day @ the Hideout - June 1 - both great bands and a good-sounding, small room - should be excellent.

Doves are playing a big show in Birmingham in the summer, open air gigs aren't my favourite but apparently their only West Midlands show of the year.
also Robyn Hitchcock is playing in a Church in October, should be good.
Then some maybes:
Sunn O)))
Soft Machine (god knows what resemblance this will have to the 60s-70s version of the band I love, but I'm curious..)
A Certain Ratio (w/ Andrew Weatherall)
Josefin Ohrn & The Liberation

Off to see the legendary Daddy Long Legs tonight. Nothing quite like some high octane blues to get the ol' feet tapping!
Followed up with Swervedriver on Tuesday. One of the first bands that i really dug way back in the early 90s and, weirdly, one who i never saw live. No idea how that happened, but me and my son are off to see them!

Will be interesting to see what set they'll be playing also.

nice little festival in Birmingham later in the year, particularly interested in the Sunday night. Jane Weaver, The Comet is Coming, Bo Ningen and Flamingods for £20, can't argue with that

I noticed The Claque are on the Sunday too. Decent Irish act featuring the guitarist from Girl Band (who are also back on the scene and have really seemed to influence a slew of up and coming Irish guitar bands).angelsighs wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 10:00 pm nice little festival in Birmingham later in the year, particularly interested in the Sunday night. Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
spotted that Jonathan Wilson is doing a short acoustic tour this week, might go to that (although I would prefer to see him in full band mode, I'm sure it would still be good)
also Explosions In The Sky are doing a tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. might go to more than one show as they are one of my favourite bands, and will be cool if the setlists cover their whole career.
no news of any psych fest lineup announcements yet?

Just found out that the headliner on the night SPZ are playing at the Today's Festival in Turin has been changed from Beirut (rather dull Indie-Rock) to Ride!

-Ceremony/Pissed Jeans

Spiritualized and Ride, Low and The Cinematic Orchestra on successive nights in Turin, Spiritualized in Vevey and then London, New Order and GSYBE in Munich, Sunn O))) and Caspar Brötzmann in Basel, and Pixies in Zürich. I think that's about it until the end of the year.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
The Cure with Mogwai and Twilight Sad this Friday,
Wand end of the month,
possibly Pixies in Sept,
Moon Duo Oct,
then Twilight Sad again in Nov,
maybe Mark Lanegan in Dec, and that will be my gig year done.

YLT at Brudenell tomorrow
then off to End of The Road Festival (Spiritualized, Wand, Kikaguko Moyo, Steve Gunn, William Tyler, Beak, Fontaines DC, Low, Courtney Barnett, Goat Girl, Tyler Childers all among the acts I aim to see)
Later in the year We have Mark Lanegan, Ride, Moon Duo, Black Mountain and Cigarettes After Sex all in Manchester

I’m going to that Yo La Tengo show at the Brudenell tonight too. Be good to say hello! I’ll most likely be in a blue Ween shirt but we met at Holmfirth at that Spz show anyways. A few of us going this evening anyway…

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Interested to hear what YLT were like. as I've said elsewhere on the board, I've always found them fairly disappointing as a live act. strangely though the exception was the acoustic show I saw them do- not sure if this 'Freewheelin' setup is also stripped down?
your list is similar to mine (albeit with no EOTR unfortuantely) however the Birmingham Black Mountain date is a clash..Aquarian-Time wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2019 11:23 am YLT at Brudenell tomorrow

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Yo La Tengo at the Brudenell.
I have to say I was rather disappointed. There was quite a bit of really nice music but the issue for me was the ‘question and answer’ sessions which just didn’t work unless you were very close to the front. Almost all the actual questions asked by the audience were inaudible, as were a few of the responses, particularly the ones from Georgia. It was potentially interesting but it became irritating as it ended up as blank space where I stood and waited optimistically for more music.
The music, when it did come, was great. A stripped-down acoustic sound playing all manner of old YLT classics, some covers, plus a few obscurities from bass player James. It all sounded really nice. Opening tune Sugarcube was beautiful – it captured the essence of what’s a pretty noisy song normally but gave it a gentle treatment that worked brilliantly. My other highlight was a wonderful cover of The Monkees ‘Door Into Summer’, a highly underrated song I’ve loved for years. Sadly the gaps between the songs increased to over 15 minutes at some points as the band told old anecdotes and answered questions – over half the time they were on stage was chatter. I got bored, as did my other half and after about 80 minutes we went home.
I’d go and see them again but only doing a proper set. It was a nice idea in principal, but in practice it fell short of expectations.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
To answer and add some thought on YLT last night, i thought it was wonderful, however I was at the front and could hear everything perfectly, my mate went to the bar and said you couldnt hear anything from the floor, so i totally get Runcible's point.
The show ended just short of 2 hours and the chat and questions died down as they ran through some great covers. Set is up on setlist.fm. The version Blue Line Swinger was spell binding.
Lovely show, the music I always enjoy and i found them charming, humble and had the ability to tell a good story, that said if they don't project sufficiently to the rest of the audience , that is a problem.
As always the venue is just superb, maybe nigh on 150 mile round trip but well worth it

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Between now and the end of the year I would hope to be catching all of these:
Wand, Mclusky (was shocked to see they were back ), King Khan's Louder than Death, Efrim Manuel Menuck (GYBE/A Silver Mt.Zion) & Kevin Moria, Jah Wobble, Pere Ubu, Spiral Stairs, King Kong Company, Flamingods, Tropical Fuck Storm, Priests, Steve Mason, Primal Scream and Mark Lanegan.
Unfortunately, I just started shift work so i'll probably end up seeing fuck all!
Dave, you could do worse than checking out Bodega and Viagra Boys at EOTR. Caught both earlier this year and definitely worth a look. Thankfully they ARE at EP. I'd also recommend Pom Poko (another I went to on a whim this year and thoroughly enjoyed). The Murder Capital are getting a lot of hype along with Fontaines DC, both bands are decent but not worthy of the accolades imo. For me, Just Mustard and The Claque are the two Irish acts people should be looking out for. Especially live.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Glad you both enjoyed Yo La Tengo chaps (even if only the music bits Runcible). As I said I've generally found their live form pretty patchy. Some of the big jams can be great and sometimes they come across well, but other times they just sounded weak or sloppy.
The exception was the acoustic show I saw, they had ex member Dave Schramm back on guitar and not only did he fill out the sound perfectly (sometimes Ira can struggle to emulate the album versions on his own) but with some immaculate guitar lines.
Sunray- sounds like you're gonna be busy indeed if those darned shifts don't get in the way! I'm considering Jah Wobble in the new year too

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Yeah I forgot Bodega, that was on my list, will check out Viagra Boys too if now clashes. I do think its a pretty varied line up and plenty of stuff I really like so looking forward to it for sure.
Going back to YLT, my take is you always need to be close to the front when watching them, due to the 3 piece nature, more delicate songs these days and Ira's fragile voice (and Georgia's), the further back you are the more its sounds probably fairly limp. When I play their records, I always turn it up a bit more, otherwise its merely background music.
Jon, we doing Dream Syndicate in London ?? Don't appear to be adding anymore dates as I see it

yes 'limp' is a good word to describe YLT live, I guess that's kind of what I was getting at.Aquarian-Time wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2019 8:46 am Yeah I forgot Bodega, that was on my list, will check out Viagra Boys too if now clashes. pretty sure Dream Syndicate will be a goer, still need to check about time off work etc though. I have Future Days festival the night before so might be flagging a bit.. (rarely do two gig nights in a row these days)

10,000 Russos tomorrow night with support from Frankie Teardrop Dead. Can't wait!
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Steve Mason on Friday night at the Brudenell with some fellow board members, really looking forward and hopefully will go someway to erasing the memory of the last gig at Belgrave Music Hall which for various reasons was not the best, not because of the music I hasten to add
'Remember, change is not good'
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Hawkwind at the Albert Hall on the 26th Nov. Not really a big Hawkwind fan, but it's their 50th anniversary concert, so hoepfully will be good evening. Hope they play "It's so easy"!

Hi Everyone,
It's been years since I knew how to even log in here Cheers to Laz for helping me out on that one.
First log in took me to my inbox and my last email was from Muscles - sad - god bless his sweet soul.
I have been a regular voyeur of the site over the years.
Saw Spz in Amsterdam earlier this year - was amazing - still no sign of a winter UK tour though?
Off to see Steve Mason on Sunday locally in Reading - good to see you guys have been rating him.
Also been to see Gary Numan at the Roundhouse which was cool and just booked up the Mary Chain next year also at the Roundhouse.
The only thing that hasn't changed is there is still no new Spectrum Material lol

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Rounding off the gig going yr with Hawkwind on Sat, 50th anniversary thingy, not seen then since `92 by my reckoning so quite a while, new album doesn`t too bad, then Twilight Sad the following Sat and that`s Nov. Dec will be Kungens Man and possibly Mark Lanegan or Blanck Mass, been a good yr for gigs.
Next yr is shaping up as well, Mick Head and Monster Magnet in Jan then William Doyle and The Murder Capital in Feb and JAMC in March I think, pretty good start to next yr.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Couple more to come this year but 2020 is looking good, kicking off extremely early on 3rd Jan. with
The Utopia Strong, then it's
Beak
A Winged Victory For The Sullen
Blanck Mass
Firefriend (work permitting)
Steve Ignorant 'Crass Songs 1977-84'
The Chemical Brothers
Also considering Dan Deacon and The Specials (the latter falling on our anniversary, on a Saturday, hence the interest. Could be a good day out ).
Plus Liverpool Psych Fest and Electric Picnic of course.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I'm also struggling with the Lanegan LP and have given up a bit on Ride. I've not even listened to their latest LP. Steve Mason was great in Liverpool a couple of weeks ago and his recent LPs are uniformly excellent.Aquarian-Time wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:39 am Finishing the year with Ride in Manchester, Mark Lanegan (same venue) (although i really cant get into his new album) and Steve Mason @ yes in Manchester.
The 3 piece lineup that Mason's band currently uses (drums, bass/backing vox and guitar/percussion/vox ) generates a phenomenal sound for such minimal instrumentation. It is wonderfully upbeat music too, which is just spot on at a pretty bleak time of year.
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
With a near total lack of any promotion or social media presence it been easy to overlook, having my doubts about this actually happening, angelsighs wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 10:20 am
I must admit.. I'd totally forgot that Liverpool Psych Fest was happening! :/ surely due for some band announcements soon?

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I can't see Liverpool Psych Fest happening to be honest. There's been little to no social media activity since the tickets went on sale back in April. It all seems rather strange. I thought it was odd when they went ahead with a pre-sale a full year before the show with no line up announcement at all. Kind of glad I held off buying a ticket, although I hope to be proved wrong.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I had a sneaky look at a live set on YouTube- seems to be fair bit of instrument swapping I think. Good to hear the album stands up beyond just the possible novelty factor.
Time will tell on Liverpool Psych Fest then. It has been weirdly quiet. With that and no Spiritualized UK tour its left a bit of a hole in the gig calendar.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I Love the Ride stuff, yeah its not the 1st album, but these guys are about 50 years old and still know how to hit it hard live. That said they should look at a different producer, its just a bit wishy washy at times on record.
Lanegan, I may miss as a) its a Sunday b) the album is poo c) I'm out every night this week for one reason or another, so domestic tensions may surface !!
Psych Fest, I reckon won't happen
Cheers to Sunray on The Thumpers heads up, they are great hopefully gonna see them next year in Manchester

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Next gig is Tyler Childers in Manchester on Jan 18th, then the small matter of Ride in Berlin on Feb 2nd !!
I noticed I hadn't posted about the Ride show in Manchester, probably gig of the year for me.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I must admit total ignorance around this album until now, had no idea Rob from Exit Calm was up to something.
the Birmingham venue is approximately the size of my front room, you will certainly be seeing the whites of their eyes!! it's quite an impressive list of guest singers for the album, but I wonder how they will handle that live.
as for myself I am largely playing it by ear with gigs this year but these are the ones I think I will be attending so far:
Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters/Teeth of The Sea
Om/Pharaoh Overlord (note- the latter have a cover of the Spacemen's Revolution on their latest album!)
Angel Olsen
The Chameleons (no more 'Vox'- Reg is back on guitar apparently)
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Anyone attending the Flowers of Hell concert tonight?
Looks like a great venue and the supportact is the Will Carruthers Trio...

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
The Humanist live vox duties are being handled by Jimmy Mudriski of Puressence fame. So that was me sold straight away
Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
Might be none for the forseeable 'cos NOW THEY'RE CANCELLING GIGS! NOOOOOOO!!!
Here in Ireland, starting from today, a Government Directive has been implemented to cancel all events of over 100 capacity (indoor) and 500 capacity (outdoor) due to take place between now and 29th March.
I suspect this will be extended.
My weekend of gigs is now out the window. Yeah i know, i'm a selfish twat etc.

Re: What gigs have you got coming up?
I had the Mary Chain in Glasgow next week @ Barras and they are threatening similar action here. Just waiting to hear. My better half is also starting to stress about our Portugal break at the end of April.
Don't get me wrong, i understand it serious, but i do think a lot of this is being blown out of proportion. The fear mongering and panic spread by the fucking press is outrageous.
Not fucking happy...
