Electric Prunes - Lost Dreams , dunno whats happened here but this is the best I've heard them (apart from the Live Stockholm disc) the mix is ace really punchy and 3D. awesome compilation.
13th Floor Elevators - all of it
and BOREDOMS - Vision Creation New Sun , the perfect accompaniment to a batch of liberty cap mushrooms

Had it on vinyl yrs ago, no idea what happened to it, still have it on cd though,SpEnCeR1 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 30, 2020 3:10 pm Electric Prunes - Lost Dreams , dunno whats happened here but this is the best I've heard them (apart from the Live Stockholm disc) the mix is ace really punchy and 3D. awesome compilation.

The Cadillac Three - Tabasco & Sweet Tea. Incredibly this is the second album these Nashville country fuzz boys have released in 2020! And they've made what is essentially a full blown funk album. Sounds fantastic.
GospelbeacH - Let It Burn. Ticks my country rock sweet spot.
Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain. You forget how good these guys were in their prime.
Talking Heads - Fear of Music. Just magnificent from start to finish. And really psychedelic a lot of the time.
Bosques - Invocacion. New album from hazy Argentinean drone outfit

The Sounds - Dying to Say This to You
I haven't listened to them in years, but they seem to hold up pretty well. They put out a new album this year: Something to Die For. I'm still processing the new one.

I LOVE GospelbeacH... fabulous songwriting and amazing musicianship all round. Brent is such a lovely guy too. Have you heard their live album Mark? Captures the energy and fun of their live shows brilliantly!
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I haven't. I've heard about it though - will try and check it out!

A Courteous Invitation To An Uninhabited Anabatic Prism by Decolonize Your Mind Society.
Haven't been on here over the lockdown periods. This album has kept things uplifted for me in those really down times.
Can't imagine life without music. Some great stuff around this year . Just wanted to wish everybody on here the very best of Peace and Love. Hopefully there will be Venues and Live music to go to soon. Thanks for keeping this forum Live.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
A bunch of Cardinal Fuzz releases that arrived this week. Pick of the bunch for me are:
Tambourinen - Wooden Flower: An offshoot of The Myrrors that apparently is a solo album. Had me fooled, as it sounds like a full on band jamming it out. Highly recommended for the instrumental psych jammers out there.
Alien Mustangs - Beat Of The Earth: Not too dissimilar to Sei Still or 10000 Russos but heavier, with a bit more grit and garage vibes.
A nod also to Acid Mother's Temple - Chosen Star Child's Confession: Regarded as the first album proper with the new line up and it's a good listen. 45 minute duration, quite jazzy and restrained (relatively speaking) in parts and no worse for it. Cometary Orbital Drive gets a reworking and the last song veers towards Mainliner territory with its filthy guitar overdrive. Nice.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I'm really impressed by 'Shadow of Fear' the new Cabaret Voltaire LP. OK, it is really a Richard H. Kirk solo LP but it is a really solid set of tracks and a comprehensive return after 26 years. The pressing of the vinyl LP is really stunning as they've gone for a double LP with two tracks per side, which I really wish Sonic had done with his LP earlier this year. The clarity of the low end heft from the Cabs LP is very impressive. Highly recommended. It'll be in my top 5 LPs of the year (say's the lifelong Cabs fan to the surprise of absolutely no-one).

although I am a fan of the band, I do find that a little bit of Acid Mothers goes a long way and really you only need a few of their releases. If you've bigged this up I will check it out however.

War On Drugs - Live Drugs, live albums have a pretty bad rap but honestly this is brilliant, recordings are outstanding

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Little Richard - Southern Child: Never even knew of this album before today and a pleasant discovery it has been. Little Richard goes Country-Funk basically, although there is more emphasis on the Country than you might expect. Final track 'Puppy Dog Song' stands up to any Psych-funk you can think of. There are a few here that would enjoy this.
Alex Maas - Luca: Debut solo album from The Black Angels frontman. Mellower than his usual work, kind of acoustic, but well suited for today's wet and dreary Sunday. Will probably give a few more spins.
Endless Boogie - The Gathered and Scattered: Had to split this over a few days as it's 3 hours worth of EB lo-fi jams. Some top quality tunes as per usual with this lot. You either like 'em or you don't, they certainly ain't changing for ya!
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - K.G.: Hmmm. I sometimes get the impression with KGLW (and White Denim tbh) that they see music as some kind of intellectual exercise, 'Look at us, we can try our hand at anything. Ooh we're good aren't we?' I know that goes against the image of a bunch of Aussie stoners but their albums are kinda hard to love (aside from the first few). Maybe it's the sheer amount of them that's the problem, you're trying to sit with one then another comes along in quick succession. The Aliens can throw the kitchen sink at each album but it always sounds like it's coming from the heart, and the head doesn't even get a look-in. Anyway, on this album The Giz.. try some Eastern vibes and disco amongst other things. It's not bad but they should slow down their release schedule methinks. I'm probably being too hard on them really.
The Bachelor Pad - All Hash & Cock: I must admit this lot passed me by. I'd never heard of them until i stumbled upon this comp. From Glasgow and on the go between 1987-91. The blurb says 'Buzzcocks fronted by Syd Barrett'. Definite Barret-era Floyd feel alright but with lots of fizzy indie pop melodies. If the Belshill scene dropped acid perhaps? https://emotional-response-recs.bandcam ... h-and-cock
Afterwardness- S/T: Irish 3-piece with a 90s pedigree (ex members of The Idiots and Petlamb) Have seen these guys a couple of times and they're decent. Two tracks over 35 mins, the first like Oneida, second more of a Stereolab vibe. https://afterwardness.bandcamp.com/rele ... XDJaP4WhdI

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
This band really rip my knitting! I read so many people say the are the saviours/golden children of modern psychedelia (along with Tame Impala ) but, to me, its bordering on unlistenable. Utter prog bollocks. Sounds like everyone is playing a different song and trying to outdo the others.sunray wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 9:28 pm

I recently took a punt on their PolyWandy... LP to really give them a try to see if they worked better as an album, but nope. Quickest i've flipped and turned off an album in a long time. Was then discussing them with a friend who gave me a copy of their "Gumboot.." LP and it was no better. I just don't see it. I find most bands that release so much already run the risk of saturating people with their name/music that inevitably means people will become more critical of the output, but i'm struggling to "get it". What the hell am i missing? Maybe i'm just getting old
p.s not having a dig at any fans of KG... just struggle to understand why they are held in such high regard.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I don't mind a bit of Prog here and there. I have never managed to get into King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard though. It all sounded like a mess to me. Thankfully, I didn't start buying their LPs as that gets very expensive, very quickly.Laz69 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 8:58 amThis band really rip my knitting! Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Some prog i like and have no issue with. What i was trying to convey is the way prog originally became "for the intellectuals" back in its heyday. Making out its like some super complicated higher-level thing and you need to be of a certain higher intelligence to "get it". As i suggested, maybe i'm just getting older and more contankerous...
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I am old and cantankerous and quite happy about that. I've no truck with any form of musical elitism though. Punk dealt with the worst excess of prog as far as I am concerned. It failed to finish off Phil Collins sadly, so must be regarded as a failure in that respect.Laz69 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 3:09 pmSome prog i like and have no issue with. Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Heard this on the radio the other night and while it's obviously famous for being sampled by Eminem for 'My Name Is', it struck me that Primal Scream lifted the early section of the song for Kill All Hippies! This may already be common knowledge (in which case i shall hang my head in shame ).

Cheers for the nudge on this one Olan, loving it, from a slow-ish more industrial start this really doesn`t half build once into the later tracks, at one point I had to check I wasn`t actually listening to Underworld - Universal Energy - which is a good thing, love a bit of Underworld, this might be my last purchase of this yr or the 1st of next, olan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 29, 2020 3:23 pm I'm really impressed by 'Shadow of Fear' the new Cabaret Voltaire LP. Sound is a bit dodgy during first song (Hypnotized) but persevere and you shall be rewarded. Some serious wah-abuse at times in this. Feelin' Just Fine...wow! The riff during Smiles that kicks in at 55:53
Probably a headphone listen though.

Fulu Miziki is a multidisciplinary ensemble of musicians from Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) founded by Old Pisko Crane. For several years, Pisko envisioned an orchestra made from materials found in trash cans and dumps. The instruments vary constantly in search of new sounds.
In 2016, they were joined by the performer Aicha Mena Kanieba who with Le Meilleur, DeBoul, La Roche, Padou, Sekelembele, Tche Tche and the Old Pisko Crane formed the Eco-Afro-Futurist collective Fulu Miziki.
Fulu Miziki’s artists make their own performance costumes, masks and instruments. Their distinct sound supports a Pan-African message of artistic liberation, peace and a deep concern about the ecological situation of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the whole world. For Fulu everything can be reclaimed and re-enchanted.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I hadn't played it for a few years but the moment 'I Don't Know' came in my nostalgia box was well and truly ticked. That album is worth it for that tune alone! I actually prefer the debut album but I fancied this one. I met these guys once many decades ago when they did an in-store signing. I deliberately wore a King Missile T-shirt which caused them all to get somewhat excited. Lovely bunch of chaps I must say...

Anyone heard the songs from the new Mogwai?
I really liked the first one, but the other new one (Ritchie Sacrament) isn't really floating my boat. Bit too poppy. It's weird as I can actually be quite partial to their vocal songs.
The production on both songs is fantastic though. It's like they've learnt a bit from their soundtrack work. They sound 50 miles wide.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
This week i have been mostly down with the kids
TV Priest - Uppers: Muscular post-punk. Not unlike Idles but with a bit more going on. Lose points for the singer though, who unfortunately is a bit too close to the Idles dude in his style. https://tvpriest.bandcamp.com/album/uppers
Black Country, New Road - For The First Time: Hard to describe. Jazzy bits, violins, brass, a singer who reminds me of Jarvis Cocker though doesn't really sound like him. Nice guitar sound at times, like when Alan Sparhawk cuts loose with Low. A little like Black Midi who get namechecked on one of the songs. Might get tagged with being 'too clever for their own good'. I'd go see 'em live though. https://blackcountrynewroad.bandcamp.co ... first-time
CLT DRP - Without The Eyes: A guitarist who has been peeking at Melt Banana's pedals, Albini-esque drums and a singer from the PJ Harvey / Teri Gender-Bender school. Pretty good, another act i reckon would be good live. https://cltdrp.bandcamp.com/album/without-the-eyes
Goat Girl - On All Fours: Probably the most indie sounding thing i've listened to in yonks. Can't compare it to the debut as i have no recollection of that album at all. At times i thought it might slip into Electrelane territory but alas it does not. Nice with a beer on a sunny afternoon i suspect. https://goatgirl.bandcamp.com/album/on-all-fours
Sprints - Dublin based post-punkers. Decent, worth a listen. https://sprintsmusic.bandcamp.com/

Black Country, New Road seem to be getting a fair amount of buzz and are the band that a lot of the press are saying is the cool new thing. They actually played at a festival I went to way back in 2019 but I got there just as their set was finishig up. Even then there seemed to be a little buzz.
Re Goat Girl thought you were criticising Electrelane there for a moment, (about to leap to their defence) but quite the opposite!

Yep the buzz on BC,NR has been ticking over for a year or so. I could see them developing a small but rabid fanbase.angelsighs wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:16 am Black Country, New Road seem to be getting a fair amount of buzz and are the band that a lot of the press are saying is the cool new thing. No, i couldn't have a go at Electrelane! There's a thread for them here and i think you, me and Ads are the only contributors
Finally got around to it today. Enjoyable. Not too dissimilar to their other material (the uptempo tracks anyway), a bit more synth and things. Worth checking out live too, i've seen them a couple of times. Good frontman. Judging by the lyrics he seems to have given up the drugs and booze, i wonder if that will affect his onstage behaviour?

Well, still better than those threads where I'm just talking to myself
BC, NR got a proper multipage article in this month's Mojo mag. Pretty good coverage for a band who's debut album is only just coming out. They must have good PR people. I also note that the bass player is the daughter of one of Underworld.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Listened to Black Country NR this week, think they may have listened to Spiderland at some point. Really interesting album though, quite enjoyed it, I may grab it on vinyl
Working Mens Club, saw them ages ago with a different line up supporting the Liminanas, thought they were good. This album is boring though, same early New Order type keyboard sounds, bombastic drum beats and very little for me to get interested in. Luckily i have 2 of their early singles and they are worth a few quid so they are in the 'to sell' box
Listened to Taste by The Telescopes last night, first time for years , bloody superb, don't remember it being as good as that. I know they are a different beast these days, but I have ordered the dinked version of their new one (worth a few quid if its crap)
talking of selling stuff, I'm getting rid of all my White Hills stuff (so boring) includes lots of tour cds that sell for stupid money. Need more space and I have a load of stuff I have no interest in anymore . Anyone interested give me a shout.
Currently listening to lots of Polytechnic Youth stuff, Neil Young, Vetiver, Trees, O Sees as well as all the usual suspects
Mogwai Album out on Friday, needless to say box set procured
Neil Young Archives 2 box set also due to land with me anytime soon

Revisiting a couple of albums i've not had on for a while...
Forgot just how good this ^^^ track is. Played it to death when i first heard it.
Stone cold classic. love the drumming on this.
Listening to both the original and then the remaster. This is up there with the VMP L&G remaster for sheer brilliance and clarity.

I absolutely loved Jehovakill when it came out. Saw him that year at the Phoenix festival, and was disappointed that this was the only track from it he played, right at the start. While wearing a monkey mask. Which was preferable to the stripping off that followed.

Thats some great footage Ian. The version of Safe Surfer is amazing.
Jehovahkill is a weird one for me. My mates used to play it a LOT back then and i just couldn't see whatr the fuss was about. Hated every time it was put on. Then one night, while very heavily stoned, it was put on in the background and it hit hard. I can remember telling people to shut up just so i could hear it. Totally made sense and i fell in love with it. Definitely one of my most favourite albums. Saw him on the tour for Autogeddon not too long after and that was another level. The LSD helped too

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
On the back of Joe Banks Hawkwind book , Days Of The Underground on a bit of a Hawkwind kick just now, so Quark, Strangeness And Charm is getting a lot of play just now quite the performance from Bob Calvert, also the 50 Live album a decent recording from the 2019 tour, one of the last gigs I was at just before Xmas 2019. New Mogwai as well has had a couple of plays today, still to make my mind up, I mean its good but how good? Time will tell on that one,

Trees as in folk rock Gardens of Jane Delawney? I've had that album a while and really love it. I see that the big boxset came out recently and the two main albums have also been issued on vinyl. I need to check out the second album.Aquarian-Time wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 11:26 am Listened to Taste by The Telescopes last night, first time for years , bloody superb, don't remember it being as good as that. Yep Taste is indeed a superb album. So loud and angry also good songs. The new one is getting good reviews and I think might be a bit more melodic than other recent stuff.
Yup, never really rated White Hills myself- got one album which is OK but never felt the need to go any further.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I've got loads of White Hills that I never listen to, including a shedload of those tour CDRs. One day I'll sell it all, but I've yet to ever sell a single record in my life so....angelsighs wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 9:41 pmTrees as in folk rock Gardens of Jane Delawney? I've been listening to the new LPs by Mogwai (Quite good if a bit one-paced) and Tindersticks (Not great so far). Really looking forward to the new Cheval Sombre LP, the Stereolab compilation and the remix LP from Sonic. I've cut right back on buying vinyl as I've basically got zero space left. I either need to sell (not going to happen) or buy more storage.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I'm fairly good at clearing out albums myself. My collection is probably rookie numbers compared to a lot of people here but everthing I have, I can vouch for. If I don't think it will get listens going forward it can go.
I've also successfully managed to get out of the habit of buying an artists new album for the sake of it. There's now very few artists who are an automatic buy. Spiritualized being one of them, probably a handful of others.
Olan for you will it now be a case of squeezing more into the existing music room, or are we now talking about expanding beyond that? :O

Interesting (debatable that, i know ) conversation going on here as i had come on to ask about what people do when they run out of space? I'm like Olan, i find it hard to move on records but i have no more room. Honestly thinking of going digital except for a handful of artists (who all tend to have very slow release schedules so no great worry about squeezing in an extra record here or there).

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I've largely gone over to digital as I've cut back on buying LPs to the barest minimum. I'm quite happy using TIDAL for the vast bulk of my listening at the moment.sunray wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:50 amHe's buying next door and knocking throughangelsighs wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 9:45 pm Olan for you will it now be a case of squeezing more into the existing music room, or are we now talking about expanding beyond that? :O

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I'm seriously running out of space, too much of a compulsive buyer, but also getting to the stage where stuff just has to go, so much psych by numbers stuff has already gone Gnod, Oscillation, Camera, God Unknown Singles vol 3 (that was all rubbish), Nighbeats, Cult of Dom keller, Dreamtime, BWNIAS, Myrrors, Dead Sea Apes, Tomaga, Acid Mothers temple,Antroprpoph, White Fence...all left the building
Mogwai album is great.
Listening to more ambient, electronic stuff at the minute

The new Cheval Sombre album arrived in the post today. A most welcome surprise because I wasn't expecting it until the offical release date on Friday. I'm half way through track 4 and it's bloody brilliant. Hard concentrating on your work when you keep drifting off and looking out of the window...... lovely sounds.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I made the mistake of listening to Mogwais new album last Friday through my iphone speaker as I worked in an empty house, I guess I was impatient and it didn`t sound particularly great except for a few bits an pieces, disappointing basically. My mistake, a few plays later with a few drinks on a `decent ` sound system over the weekend and bugger me if its not brilliant, its like all the best bits of accepted/perceived Mogwai stereotypes and trademarks, even the derogatory ones, all rolled into one but with something extra, maybe its this last yr of pandemic/plague island , maybe its 25yrs honing your craft -`their albums all sound the same!!` Maybe, but not this one - I don`t know if its the times or Friedman production sharpened to a pin, some of the bass/ drone sounds over the hour run time are phenomenal, just don`t listen on your iphone,

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
My verdict on the new Mogwai after a couple of listens is less blown away. It's weird with Mogwai, I don't think they've ever made a bad album per se (very consistent) and their music is generally a varied mixture of the same elements they've always had. But for me it doesn't always come together into a classic album. This one isn't a patch on Every Country's Sun for me- yet.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Thanks for the reference here. I hadn't played QSAC for about 20 years so I got stuck into it again after reading your post. And it's so damn good! I'd forgotten just how many great songs are on this....
Someone once said to me that if you are reminded of music you love but haven't listened to in a while you should play it as soon as you can. After all when will you get a better opportunity? I've found this to be excellent advice...
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
agreed, the new one is rather dull IMO, haven't heard Every Countrys Sun so may check that out.angelsighs wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 7:49 am My verdict on the new Mogwai after a couple of listens is less blown away. i'm on the shoegaze x country tip courtesy of MOOSE; the early EPs, XYZ and Honey Bee are underrated classics fo sho
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
This arrived during the week. I'm really enjoying it. The contrast between the untreated acoustic guitar and the electronics is great. Live at Levitation by Kikagaku Moyo also arrived. I've yet to hear a bad KM record. This one does a decent job of capturing the atmosphere of their live show.stegraham wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 2:42 pm The new Cheval Sombre album arrived in the post today. Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
yeah may well be a grower but Every County's Sun is a much better version of the modern lush Mogwai for me. that was their best album since ooh.. Hardcore I reckon.SpEnCeR1 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 9:32 amagreed, the new one is rather dull IMO, haven't heard Every Countrys Sun so may check that out.angelsighs wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 7:49 am My verdict on the new Mogwai after a couple of listens is less blown away. Wasn't there only one album (Rave Tapes) inbetween Hardcore... and Every Country's Sun?

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Whoops! I guess it just felt like longer between them. There was all the soundtrack stuff and EPs too I guess. Its like you were saying above about bands who are prolific. With Mogwai I can't keep up!

Ah yeah, i was half pulling your leg really.angelsighs wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 5:47 pmWhoops! I guess it just felt like longer between them. There was all the soundtrack stuff and EPs too I guess. Its like you were saying above about bands who are prolific. With Mogwai I can't keep up!
I kinda skipped all the soundtrack stuff, there was too much of it and i figured it wouldn't be crushing slabs of noise or great riffs so no rush to dive in. It was years before i got around to Rave Tapes and Every Country's Sun as i assumed they'd be solid albums that sounded like Mogwai and my ears had more pressing engagements lined up. I am a fan but the thought of a new Mogwai album hasn't excited me for a while. They're a victim of their own consistency really.
Still listening to Terry Gross. Multiple listens over a few weeks, most unusual for me: https://terrygrossband.bandcamp.com/
