What's The Deal?
PSYCHEDELIC - 'producing distorted sensory perceptions and feelings or altered states of awareness or sometimes resembling psychosis'.
A word constantly over-used and not understood in its true meaning. Simple Minds in whatever 'wacky' 80's dance guise can never be accurately described as such.
Sure they may have slightly moved away from their disgusting MOR highway briefly but even experimental is a word wasted on these sad fucks.
Simple Minds together with U2 etc have spent years sucking corporate cock determined to forge a 'career'. Both groups would fuck their own Grandma's for more sales/cash/expsoure/hype.
Neither can ever be categorised as psychedelic or rock n roll. Neither should ever exist except for very lazy people too scared to really experiment.
Normally Runcible i can dig your threads and views but man..... Scary shit....

Re: What's The Deal?
Go and LISTEN to those tracks - forget the other albums. During my time spent dawdling with psychedelics in the late 80s these very same Simple Minds tracks used to really get me off. I can't believe we've moved from arguing whether this music is good to if its psychedelic - I believe its both, although we're not talking full blown 'Woodstock brown acid' psych, rather a more trancey effect. Although I don't really enjoy trance dance music its most deffo psychedelic, and the Simple Minds tracks I've mentioned slot right in there.SpacemanRob wrote:PSYCHEDELIC - 'producing distorted sensory perceptions and feelings or altered states of awareness or sometimes resembling psychosis'.

Next up - Talking Heads. Some of their Remain in Light album is completely tripped out - tell me I'm wrong. Oh, and chuck in their classic track from Fear of Music 'Drugs'. But RIL contains one of the most subtle yet wildly psychedelic songs I've ever heard (Seen and Not Seen for those who haven't heard), mainly for its lyrical content.
Waiting, and expecting, the traditional disagreement.
Totally agree with you nasty, heard my life in th bush of ghosts the other day for the first time. Couldn't believe it was made back in the day, really ahead of its timenasty wrote:Indeed Remain in Light is one brilliant album.... thought the Overload might have been mentioned. Byne and Eno's my life in the bush of ghosts released in the same year continues some of the work on side 2 beautifully .... way, way ahead of its time.
Bush of Ghosts. Oh yes indeed - a time when Eno and Byrne could do no wrong.
I'm also a huge fan of Byrne's Catherine Wheel album. Some very trippy moments on that. There was a film on Channel 4 I think with a collage of films interspersed with the band live screened in about 1982. A version of 'My Big Hands' with Byrne singing through a megaphone was utterly incredible.
Back on Remain in Light I believe it was Adrian Belew's demented guitar that also stood out, although the whole thing is a masterpiece.

oh yes the Catherine Wheel was another fave of mine at the time .... "walking" I seem to remember as being another highlight, that and it being a mission to get hold of the full version on anything but casette. Nice to be reminded how blown away I was with all that stuff.
Back to remain in light, surely the striking resemblence between "The Overload" and Joy Division's "I remember nothing" was more than coincidental?

I think it's constantly overused, but not in the sense you speak of.SpacemanRob wrote:PSYCHEDELIC - 'producing distorted sensory perceptions and feelings or altered states of awareness or sometimes resembling psychosis'.

The last thing music needs is categorisation, but for me things like Captain Beefheart or something like 'Black Monk Time' is far more 'psychedelic' than any number of fx-drenched shoegazey bands with whispery vocals...
Likewise probably the most psychedelic records i've ever heard would be filed loosely under dance...there was a classic Laurent Garnier tune from a few years ago 'the sound of the big babou' - madness!
In fact, the most psychedelic record I heard last year was probably 'Oops, oh my' by Tweet ... psychedelic in the brain-twisting fashion
let's not forget all MUSIC is psychedelic ... when on psychedelics .
i found the killers quite good when on psychedelics , in reality i find them arrogant.
but if we are talking about something which freak's me out and makes me confused then i'd have to agree with the guy who said "black monk time"
also the residents - meet the residents ...... if you wanna get scared listen to this

Hey, that was me... I think a psychedelic record does not neccessarily have to have sprung from a mind blasted apart on the wildest trips...unless of course you are George Clinton.
I bought a live Ray Charles album last night called 'Live in Newport' [1958] - I bought it on the strength that it had 'Night Time' on it and the sleeve...Ray leading the band on sax.
And it's amazing - the version of 'Night Time' is stupendous...Ray is right on it and the band are really slow and funky. A real spectral kind of funk.
Its burns into your mind, what a great sound (Tom Dowd was involved in production, a real psychedelic feeling...this was filed under 'jazz' - although I imagine jazz-purists would hate it.

speaking of ray charles. i finally got around to seeing the movie this weekend. actually we went to see 'lemony snicketts a series of unusual events' and after seeing it and feeling like we had just been robbed, decided to sneak in and see RAY. which is a really good movie. jamie fox does a mesmerizing ray. see it while you can.
did you know ray had 12 children by 7 different women. something the movie forgot to mention!

Simple Minds?slim wrote:Runcible, you are correct, the long version of I Travel, Love song, the remix of Sweat in Bullets, in fact all those early Virgin singles and the Sons and Fascination and Sisters Feelings Call albums are good (so is most of New Gold Dream too) but what I didn't want to encourage is anybody standing in the cow-pat that is Simple Minds post '83, not without medical care on hand and adult supervision.
I suppose at one point I was one of the biggest fans of theirs in the world. Around the New Gold Dream era. I saw it all going wrong with Sparkle in the Rain and all the crap they put out after that. And I was lucky to cash in on most of my extensive collection.
The late 70's early 80's stuff IS psychedelic. Some of the Real To Real Cacophony stuff and more so the Empires And Dance material, I Travel & Room. They really did hit their stride on Sons And Fascination. Chilly psychedelia.
Charlie Burchill is the guitarist in question. He did some amazingly atmospheric, pre ambient chill stuff with the original keyboardist Michael McNeil. I saw a lot of that in rehearsals and soundchecks. Its a shame none of that was ever released.
They are some of the nicest people I ever met in the music business. They just kind of adopted me as this uber fan who would turn up in some pretty odd places. Toronto, New York, Edinburgh, London.
They are just one of those bands that wont give up. I hear they are still big in France though.

Jerry Lee Lewis has a new album out this year that will either be fucking amazing or a massive let down - he's got some good, honest producer* behind him (think Cash & Rubin) ... only thing is Kid Rock is involved as well...
Like Elvis his best cuts are from the country/soul songbooks... and of course what could be more rock n' roll than marrying your 13 year old cousin?
Second cousin mind...
Jerry's greatest/worst/most outrageous quote has to be in the late 80's was when he was asked about his ex-wife/cousin ...
"I wonder if she's learnt to fuck properly yet..."

Jason's version: 'I've never seen any cheques'.
Version told to me personally by Steve and Gerald of Spaceage with accounts on hand to prove the point: Cheques are sent to Jason and someone is cashing them.
Old promos - whatever is their personal possession can be sold anyway without anyone having to get a slice - its the same as you and me flogging our old music. Its stuff that is royalty orientated (i.e. reissues) that generates money, and Spaceage proved to me that the right share goes Jason's way. So I know who I believe here.
Brilliant idea. Post the cheque stubs here - must be so easy to obtain, right?
Christ. Some people are so far up Jason's rear end they simply can't hear anything bad said about him, ever. Your post concerning Lupine Howl's sacking on another thread sums up your blinkered attitude Juliette.
Think about it - he'd have sued by now if he didn't get it. Third Stone wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

I'm not defending the guy but... thats just the way he is, I think. Its really nobody's biz about what checks he got and didn't. He's made it pretty clear that he does not want to get personal in interviews.. why should he want to talk about how much loot he gets from Sonic? People never seem to get this...
just a thought...

You've missed the point. It was Jason who continually claimed he got no royalties, not the other way round. I simply said, in response to someone who brought the subject up, that I had been to visit Third Stone and seen the accounts myself in their offices (and sorry Juliette - I took no copies!). I don't recall them ever making a song and dance about these cheques - that was Jason's department.synthiA wrote:I'm not defending the guy but... thats just the way he is, I think. My point was that Jason performs this song and dance only when he's asked. If nobody asked or prompted him, he'd say absolutely nothing..... about anything. Agreed? He does not go out of his way to make these claims. Seems that most of what he actually says in interviews is pretty much bullshit 90% of the time. He's chosen not to play that game. Cruel bastard?? Again, not defending him... I'm just pointing out that these apparent lies are probably just ways of this person (jason) dealing with questions that he does not want to be involved with. He wants to make music... not talk to strangers about himself.. Can you REALLY blame him?runcible wrote:You've missed the point. Jason & Sonic
The only reason Jason doesn't talk much in interviews is because he's a self-centred, arrogant twat who doesn't want that fact exposed in interviews in case it damages his record sales. No one I've met who's worked with him has anything to say in defence of his personality. Not only that, his music's going down the shitter as well, as the awful "Amazing Grace" (basically, Primal Scream's equally disappointing "Give Out But Don't Give Up" on half the budget) reveals.
Give me Spacemen 3 / Spectrum / E.A.R. any day. Why Sonic Boom persists in wanting anything to do with this talent-sponging Mark E. Smith wannabe is beyond me, as he makes far better music on his own. Not only that, he's better-looking as well.

Wild Irish O we used to call him...I drank that shit with him one night and I remember I ended up sleeping behind a couch at the old CITY CLUB Downtown Motown.
Horrible stuff...he tried to school me over and over again at the value of that and MADDOG 20/20. Another cheap wine that left me with a terrible
headache.
PURESPACE I have seen his FEET and I understand why he hates feet. As I recall his girlfriends were required to wear SOCKS at all times.
BONHAM, MOON, NAILS! his real NAME is "NAILS" !
He was the best!
Check out his licks on SUNNY PIE. ya ain't gonna find much better.
And I remember Spahn Ranch opening for JESUS AND THE MARY CHAIN!
I saw him in NEW YORK CITY a month after 911.
Still the same hilarious WILD IRISH DRINKIN' O!
Cheers PURE.
We shall have a pint one of these!
MUSCLES
GO FUCKING PISTONS!
You are gettin me homesick dude!
