https://stellakola.bandcamp.com/album/stella-kola
An absolute stunner hits this week from Stella Kola, the duo of Beverly Ketch (Jow Jow, Weeping Bong Band) and Robert Thomas (Sunburned Hand of the Man, Dalthom). Now, given the pairs respective roots, along with the fact that half of the Northeast’s experimental set is on board, the first few strains that filter out of the speakers come as a surprise. The album is steeped, not in noise and dissonance, but in the fragrant, captivating folk of Linda Perhacs, Judee Sill, Karen Dalton, and Bridget St John. The latter is perhaps the most apt, as the record evokes Song for the Gentle Man, bolstering Ketch’s songs with an array of instrumentation from friends, including Wednesday Knudsen’s Flute, P.G. Six on harps, various keys, and guitar, Gary War on synth, Jen Gellineau on viola and violin, and Willie Lane and L. Gray on guitar among others.
The family affair feeds into the album’s charms. Like many of the ‘60s folk records that form its foundations, the feeling of community and camaraderie inform the album’s warmth. The players aren’t merely studio hires, but an accomplished set of friends who’ve added their own air to the album’s roster of entrancing folk. The record instantly becomes the kind of grail that collectors seek out, an indelible album that weaves its bittersweet spell from the first notes. The songs edge into the Fairport/Pentagle territory with allusions to Beggar’s, Kings, Dark Damsels, and Tarot, but Ketch and Thomas lace the songs with more than just the heavy fog of English ‘60s. The best records from that era also carried with them an inherent sadness and Stella Kola’s songs wash over the listener with a beautiful woe. It’s early in the year, but it’s hard to see an album, especially a debut, capturing the heart as hard as this one. This is an essential record.

Brief listen to the new Yo La Tengo and rather liking it. Seems more alive and vibrant particularly compared to the last one which i found a bit listless
Re: 2023 - albums, what to look forward to etc
The new YLT is great. Definitely a big improvement over the last full-length (Riot), which I also found quite boring.

Yep, thumbs up from me too and i say that as someone who has avoided them for the past 10-15 years both live and on record.
I can't explain why but when they announced a Dublin date for April i took the plunge. Even after my gut said no. But after listening to the new album i'm glad i did grab a ticket. I could be wrong but to me it sounds more like their mid-90s peak than any bits i've heard of their 21st Century output do.

Chatham Rise, on their FB page, said they were just in the process of mixing their new album. Can't wait for that! The last one - Meadow sweet - was ace!

I have always enjoyed their album output to lesser or greater degrees. Probably in the minority here though but i have never found them to be a particularly good live band. Or at least not really a consistent one.

also Andy Bell is releasing a collaboration with ambient duo Masal. I wasn't sure what to expect but damn this is pretty nice. getting Durutti Column vibes

Much of Andy's extracurricular stuff is sounding more vital than the Ride stuff to me at times, particularly the last album

New Slowdive in September
This is the first song Kisses. Have to say its a 'meh' from me. It's nice enough but it sounds just like at least 3 songs from the last record. And how different is it really from all their modern imitators?

Have to agree. Pleasant enough but too lightweight really. Also, Halstead should just shut his gob and leave all the vocals to Rachel.angel-sighs wrote: ↑Tue Jun 20, 2023 5:52 pm New Slowdive in September

In saying all that i'm delighted that they are finally playing their own gig in Dublin. Only been waiting 33 years

I am sure they will still be great live.
Maybe this song is bit of a red herring, as something pretty standard 'Slowdivey'. Theres an article in the new Mojo where they talk about the new record and it sounds like a different kettle of fish.
That last song on the previous record (Falling Ashes?), i didnt actually like the song that much in itself, but as a pointer to a more interesting and droney direction i thought it was promising. Or more fast songs like Star Roving please..

Wellwater Conspiracy's debut album 'Declaration of Conformity' is getting the remaster/reissue treatment from John McBain. A couple of bonus tracks featuring Josh Homme too.
I think Runcible and a few others here are fans.

more from the Les Rallizes Denudes archives coming, a live show from 1993, proper multitrack recording. it must be the clearest live recording of them ever. it actually sounds less extreme in terms of guitar noise but you can actually hear the thump of the rhythm section now

I think that's because it's from bandcamp. I have preordered from Juno where the postage will just be standard. mind you, the actual vinyl itself is still super expensive so I have gone for the 2CD versionherman wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 9:06 pmLooks and sounds very tempting, but 37€ postcosts...?angel-sighs wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 4:25 pm more from the Les Rallizes Denudes archives coming, a live show from 1993, proper multitrack recording. it must be the clearest live recording of them ever. it actually sounds less extreme in terms of guitar noise but you can actually hear the thump of the rhythm section now
