My Name In Black and Gold : The Rise of the Sisters of Mercy

Post by spacemanrich »

What a fantastic read ! This biography came out several years ago and I got it at my local library. This book clocks in at 394 pages and it tells the story about the formation of the Sisters of Mercy in Leeds. I didn't know this, but Andrew Eldritch's real name is Andy Taylor. Andrew Eldritch is just a persona created in the early days of the band. To this day they only produced ( 3 ) albums : First, Last and Always, Floodland and Vision Thing. The constant theme was that Andrew Eldritch was highly intelligent. He attended Oxford for a bit before being sent down for not attending classes. He ended up at Leeds University, but never attended classes there as well. The persona of " Andrew Eldritch " was highly thought out and crafted down to black clothing and sunglasses. The usual biography on bands, such as drug use, touring and inner band squabbles. Their first tour of the European continent was dubbed, " Trans Europe Excess " . He had a thing for amphetamines and was not much a drinker. Very focused and determined individual. He even created the synonymous flayed head and star logo for the Sisters of Mercy takened from a Grey's Anatomy book. I've seen them once during the Vision Thing Tour in early 90' in S.F. They play again in S.F. in the fall at the Masonic (S.F.). Always enjoyed this band and his voice was made for goth music ...
