Rockaway Beach 10th anniversary

Post by Shinesalight »

Spiritualized have been announced as one of the three headliners for the 10th Rockaway Beach festival at Butlins Bognor Regis along with Ride and Leftfield. I was there when they headlined the first year.

Not bad. Spz and Ride good combo for me but I'd need more to flesh out the lineup. This festival seems to have a decent mix looking at past lineups

Think I'm going. All 3 headliners are good, and a big fan of one of the announced support acts too (The Dirt - well worth checking out live if you get the chance)

Got my ticket straight after this year's event. Always a great weekend and had to be pretty special for next years 10th anniversary. Mainly looking forward to seeing new bands that'll hit the spot.

What's the set up like on site? Plenty of facilities? Are you able to come and go at you please over the weekend?

Played with The Dirt 3 or 4 times, really good Pysch guitar and effects with a backing track playing alongside Jacks shouty poems (he also has a side hussle as Leon The Pig Farmer, kind of a John Cooper Clarke type affair).

That's a pretty punchy initial line-up! Worth going just to see Jonny Halifax ;)

All pretty chilled. Wristband access. Town nearby easy walking distance. Food places on site if you like fast food etc. I would say pretty well organised.

He's a great addition to the line-up. Did you go to see him at the recent, think it was London gig you said you didn't want to miss out on ?

Nice, cheers. Assuming you can come and go from the site/event as you please I'm very much looking forward to it.

I did - and it was fantastic. They played in the round with about 8-9 musicians, and we were sat so close I could have tapped the drummer's cymbal!

Missed the most recent London show in Walthamstow as that's an impossible destination for me, but will definitely see them again.

Trying - so far without success - to get my gig mates enthused about this festival...

I'm out. I'm still recovering from the fried breakfast that Dave Caldwell and I had during the last ATP. I swore I would never go to another Pontins again.

Would definitely be good to get the crew together again, but this lineup isn't doing it for me yet. Previous lineups have had a nice mix of stuff so we'll see how it develops.

To be fair, this is at the way superior Butlin's at Bognor, not that wretched Pontins at Camber Sands. As a family man and a Sussex resident I've been to to Butlin's Bognor a few times and never had dicky tummy!

I'm also of the view that even a shabby holiday camp is preferable to the full on sleeping in a tent and mud experience, think I am too old for that now!

Both an excellent and entirely unsurprising set. Roll on March.

Really great set with quite a few of previous recent gig songs. The sound and visuals i loved in the newly refurbished Studio 36 venue. I'm also really looking forward to the Pure Phase gigs.

glad to hear they were on form, gives good indications to be in fine fettle for the Pure Phase shows.
I am guessing the setlist was the pretty standard recent one then

Last day at Rockaway Beach turned out to be really memorable. The Jonny Halifax Invocation ended up being my band of the weekend, even though my all time favourite band are Spiritualized.
TJHI had that fantastic hypnotic doomy drone with Jonnys wildman harmonica. Guitars, saxophone, doom drums, bells and even a triple maracas freakout dance. Just a wonderful set, far too short as per usual at a festival.
I saw them at Hackney in April last year, this was a big step up for me, just Brilliant.
Surprise for me were headliners Ride. Wasn't really looking forward to their set after listening to the last album. The set was epic with classics and new stuff. The guitars and dual vocals sound was so clear and at times quite emotional.
Considering apparently Mark Gardener had been pretty ill a few days before the gig with a dodgy throat and that they nearly had to pull out.
A great end to Rockaway Beach 10th anniversary.

Yeah, Ride were great, excellent set from them although I'd pick Leftfield as my highlight of the weekend.

Also really enjoyed Meryl Streak and The Dirt and thought EBBB were pretty good too.

Fairly sure it was identical to Fuzz Club which was identical to Manchester New Century birthday gif which only differed from the last album tour by dropping Come Together :(

I know these are the festival's lights but i hope to God they bring something similar to the Pure Phase shows. Be a bit disappointing if we don't get weapons grade visuals for those gigs. It's the hope that kills you!

With the regular sets they really should end on A Song. Well, what they really should do is segue into a 10 minute TMTTOS and then segue again into Things'll Never... for a 15 minute version and then walk off to the wail of looping noise. Job done.

Amen to that! And yes, those are proper lights.
