Spacelines (Sonic Sounds for Subterraneans)

It's fairly unlikely you'd have made it here without ever having heard of Jason's previous incarnation. So here you go, talk away...

Spacelines (Sonic Sounds for Subterraneans)

Post by Jebus Sabes »

Just listening to WFMU radio, and the DJ played a track from an album called Spacelines (Sonic Sounds for Subterraneans) [Munster Records]. Apparently this new(?) album has tracks selected by Sonic Boom as examples of the main influences on Spacemen 3.

Listing is:

1- This may be the last time - Staples Singers
2- You dont care - Bo Diddley
3- Sun Arise - Rolf Harris
4- Transparent radiation - Red Crayola
5- Angels + Devils - Sun Ra
6- Denomination blues - Washington Phillips
7- I'm so glad - Jesse Mae Hemphill
8- Needed Time - Lightning Hopkins
9- Please Stay - The Cryin' Shames
10- She’s Coming Home – Wailers
11- Stay - The Zodiacs
12- Can’t Let Go - Evie Sands

ive just got a copy and its a really good collection of tunes, suprised pete didnt stick any elevators in though, but it was a nice touch to use the 'demo' of 'transparent radiation' by the red crayola (from 'epitaph for a legend'), it is more like the spacemen treatment

i was also suprised to see (or hear rather!) the way pete self admitted some of the hooks/riffs he's nicked, i think it's ''Can’t Let Go - Evie Sands '', which for the first few bars is clearly the inspiration for the Spectrum classic ''how you satisfy me'', the same organ type riff, ace!!!

well done Pete!

Rolf Harris? Surely Pete could have just told us he was an influence rather than include it on the album.
I would have thought his Stylophone period was more of an influcence on the EAR project.

Incidentally, anyone remember the Godfathers' cover of Sun Arise?

well i personally cant stop playing it, especially some of the old blues numbers peter has picked, ''denomination blues'' is a beautiful track, the guitar sounds almost space age, but its clearly an old 1940's field recording

i give this collection the big thumbs up - go buy, it's out on CD and double vinyl, ive got the double vinyl and im going to spin a few choices from it to bemused punters next time im DJ'ing :)

I too can highly recommend this release. It's prompted me to look further into some of the acts featured. The rpm CD "Joe Meek's Groups" which features Crawdaddy Simone also contains "Little baby" by the Blue Rondos which sounds very similar to the spectrum release "It's Alright". On a more pedantic note the title track of the Honolulu Mountain Daffodils album Aloha Sayonara which is based on the Pearl Harbor attack that precipitated the entry of the US into WWII contains the dramatic build up "7th December 1940..." when of course the attack took palce on December 7th 1941. Can anyone else think of any amusing historical inaccuracies in pop songs, or have you all got better things to do?

I received this record this morning.

I think it might be the greatest record I've ever heard in my life.

Yippee!

No, it's not - it sounds like it could be on the Singing Detective soundtrack. 40s Doo wop proto Rock n Roll, with whacky vocal sound effects. "I'm an elevator operator, in a department store... "
