Feel so good
It's getting that way around here that we've pretty much covered most of the "what's-your-favourite..." topics, but I was thinking of another whilst making a playlist for the mp3 playing device.
What are your favourite feelgood songs? They may not be the hit single on the album, they may not be the fastest, the best driving song, the emotionally heart-rending ballad or whatever. But they're the songs that make you walk half a foot taller, that turn you (in your own head, anyway) into the coolest person walking down the street at that point in time, and put a smile on your face despite the fact that your job sucks, your fashion taste is awful, and your girlfriend's just left you. It's a certain lyric, that catchy riff, the funky beat, whatever.
Here's a few choice candidates as an example, starting with what I reckon is undeniably one of the best feelgood songs ever written:
Spiritualized : Going Down Slow
Supergrass : Time / Going Out / Cheapskate / Grace
Verve : Slide Away / Lucky Man
Stone Roses : She Bangs The Drum / Waterfall / Fools Gold / Daybreak
Snout : Hey Hey Hey
Rooney : Blueside
Alfie : It's Just About The Weather
Ocean Colour Scene (yes, I know, shutup) : Another Girl's Name / I Need A Love Song
Pulp : Love Is Blind / Party Hard
The La's : Feelin' (the alternate version from the 7") / Son Of A Gun
Morrissey : The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get
The Black Crowes : My Morning Song
Led Zeppelin : Good Times Bad Times
Any takers?

one or two good choices there. I'm going to state the obvious and list 'Feel So Good'. Likewise Hypnotize, and I Want You. The 12" of Feel So Sad deserves an honourable mention, not exactly upbeat, but if you put it on when you feel sad, you are guaranteed to feel better by the end.
Lucky Man is a good tune, and the only track on Urban Hymes I can tolerate.

that's a really good pick. it's lovely having that seven inch in the box, too.The La's : Feelin' (the alternate version from the 7")
a quick contribution: havin' a party and twistin' the night away from sam cooke at the harlem square club. i always think of sam cooke in the way everyone else seems to think of bob marley, you put him on and things are a bit better.
oh, that peter sellers and burt bacharach song, 'after the fox', too.

Good call... you know I thought I must have been the only person in the world to like fIREHOSE records... alas I lost all mine about 10 years ago. Haven't heard any since - apart from the odd dose of Mike Watt via J Mascis records, I've been utterly bereft.Chapter Two wrote:fIREHOSE - Soon

The Archies - Sugar Sugar
Hanson - mmmBop
Hoodoo Gurus - I Was A Kamikaze Pilot
the Kingsmen - Louie Louie
Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man
Sham 69 - If the Kids Are United
AC/DC - It's a long way to the top if you want to rock'n'roll
David Holmes - 69 Police
Mr Bloe - Groovin with Mr Bloe
The Pioneers - Let Your Yeah Be Yeah
Beatles - All You Need Is Love
.... upbeat feelgood.
I could do a list of blissed out feelgood, but this would get the endorphins flowing.
In fact, I'm feeling better already.

Entirely obvious choice but "Good Vibrations" works every time. And "Lay Back in the Sun".
Incidently, heard "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News on the radio this morning and it raised a chuckle, remembering all the times I would steal Brother Superstar's skateboard and pretend to be Marty McFly...

Man, that is a crime! Go get some - they're not so hard to find, plenty on Ebay. I know The Minutemen are the one that everyone cites as an influence, but for me it's Firehose all the way. Just such good music from end to end.will this do? wrote:Good call... you know I thought I must have been the only person in the world to like fIREHOSE records... alas I lost all mine about 10 years ago. Soon - from If'n - is a song I can listen to over and over again. It just has so much of an uplift. And the second verse: And soon you'll be there in the place that I learned - Ohio! And soon you'll see people who wait and who care there that I know... Is just amazing. Also contenders for super uplift feel good song: Disciples of the 3-Way from Mr Machinery Operator. The key to all Mike Watt's stuff for me is that he loves people, loves the daylight and loves the tangible, audible fact that music will see him through.
All of ya! Go get some Firehose! Yay!
