John Peel Day 2006

Post by duppyconquerer »

"If Elvis were alive today, I think he'd really understand happy hardcore."

Today (12th October) marks the second annual John Peel Day and tributes are taking place all over the country to celebrate his legacy and to remember the huge influence he had over all aspects of popular and alternative music.
I thought it would be nice to share memories of him here as well and perhaps upload favourite Peel Sessions, songs or anything else Peel related...
The list of groups, artists and 'cult favourites' he has championed from the sixties onwards is endless: Marc Bolan/T-Rex, Captain Beefheart, The Slits, The Faces, The Fall, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Half man / Half Biscuit, Mogwai, Boards of Canada etc...
Known for playing records at the wrong speed or even the wrong track, he would play whole sides of LPs (Tubular Bells, Cocteau Twins...), and the same record repeatedly ('Teenage Kicks'). He was the first person to play the Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen', and devoted a whole show to Punk in December 1976. He was also the first to play Hip Hop on commercial radio in the UK; and he famously played Dylan's 'Desire' in its entirity.
The Peel sessions often provided diffinitive versions of tracks from various artists, (amongst my personal favourites are The Slits and The Fall...)
He opened my ears to so many different sounds and his impeccable taste, electicism and enthusiasm ignited my passion for music in all it's forms, from 1920's Music Hall era show tunes to Jungle / Drum n Bass (as well as Aphex Twin, Spring Heel Jack et al). And he was playing Dubstep before the genre even had a name. year after year I would vote for my favourite records in the Festive 50. http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm

here are some classic sessions:

and tonight Mary Anne Hobbs will host a special tribute show on her Radio1 Experimental programme at 2-4am
you can hit rewind at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs and catch it for a week after broadcast...

"with word from Peel Night gigs around the UK.. Digital Mystikz Mala, Andy Stott, Aarron Spectre of Drumcorps and Aiden Moffat from Arab Strap...

and a mix from Peel's favourite band of all time THE FALL"

Anyone got anything to upload?

Hats off to him for giving airplay to Welsh language music, especially Datblygu (my aunt's band) and Melys.
Come on now people, come on and slide with me

i read someone talking about john peel day on another messageboard, complaining about the dianafication of john peel. i wish people would remember him for who he was, a really nice seeming enthusiastic guy who played awful music some of the time and good music some of the time. it's all gone a bit johnny cash mania. "i used to listen to him every night under the bedsheets" etc.

I always liked his shows and I share a lot of similar tastes to him.

It was always exciting hearing a Peel session from your favourite band.

Here's one of my favourites, The Birthday Party doing 'She's Hit' in 1981:

that's their opinion, and bollocks if I may say so. Any excuse to have a nag some people. Why drag things down to their negative level? I hope this doesn't descend into grumbling about people not liking some obscure Norweigen death metal...
But for me personally he was all those cliched things. And I did used to listen to him in 'under the bed sheets' - it was late at night, what do you expect? Who else would play such things love it or loathe it? That's why people loved him.
He turned me on to a whole wealth of music and things I would have NEVER heard if it wasn't for him. Seriously. It's no media deitification crap, people thought this of him when he was alive. Beefheart, Fall, Prince Far I, Misty In Roots, Low, Bongwater, Aphex, Roni Size, The Delgados etc - he was championing these people and/or the first to play their records when nobody else was.

Keep It Peel indeed.

I loved the insane mixture of music he would play - I remember making some tapes of shows and they were unbelievable - bluegrass to warped beats to swedish horrorcore, a bit of Beefheart and some great reggae! [and usually some Fall of course].

I miss his voice too. Somehow it made things a lot better.
I remember quite an emotional show after Cobain died, he played all of Nirvana's peel sessions which were astounding, and unlike all the other wankers on Radio 1 you knew he gave a fuck that night.
I also remember the Festive 50 from 1997/8 and recognising with great joy he was playing the original 'Ladies and Gentlemen...' which i'd never heard before. I remember scrabbling to find a tape to record it with...

I read Peel let Lydon play a set back in '78 or so that took in Can, Alimantado, Donna Summer etc. Like a pre-Breezeblock mix. Think of who would have been digging that. And who would never have considered doing such a thing - the whole damn roster on Nice FM for a start.

Magic. No one else comes close, and respect for someone who disregarded radio 1 playlists absolutely, completely!

The people who rip into his style probably like Chris Moyles or - fuckin' hell - Zane Lowe...
How can it be fair those fucks still stalk the earth? Peel was bigger than...radio.

Sorry I don't have anything to upload

There used to be a club up here called Frank Freeman's Dancing Club and basically it was a school for Frank and his wife to teach dance moves such as Foxtrot straight through to Jive, but also the club hosted a lot of up and coming British bands, especially late 60's - early 70's. Last week in tribute to the club and also on John Peel Day a commemorative plaque was unveiled with local authors and musicians, including Robert Plant, in attendance. John Peel Day was choose because he was a regular visitor to the club which hosted bands such as early Fleetwood Mac, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Captain Beefheart. John Peel used to say Frank Freeman's was his number one club and spent a lot of time there. He thought so much of the club he used to drive bands, including Marc Bolan, up from London just to play there.
