There's ANOTHER Lynch connection in there too, not so easy to spot. Virtual pint to the first person to get it (it's not a trick question or anything).

I won't put up my track-list just yet because i still need to send one to mojo filters and don't want him to be tempted to look here before he listens to it.

Also no prizes for guessing my last track. 8)

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's from Blue Velvet. I always get it mixed up with the Sonny Boy Williamson tune.

My other Lynch favourites include Sonny Boy Williamson's Bring It On Home To Me and Connie Stevens' Sixteen Reasons both of which feature in Mullholland Drive.

Cheers Jig - hope I get it soon...no idea what your last track will be though!

Thanks for the compliments Harmonia, I'm assuming your mostly referring to my little comedic interlude - it was basically a spur of the moment thing as I didn't want to end the previous track early (it's my favourite live version of that tune I have) but the Swedish radio presenter sounds awful over that lovely drawn out ending so I thought I'd stick a fine bit of tongue-in-cheek awful radio on afterwards.

I'll post my tracklisting at the start of next week when ro should have her's, however I'm curious to know if my live Spz track is a well known recording or something reletively rare, as I'd completely forgotten I had it until I happened upon it by chance while looking for something else, plus I've never heard mention of it on discogs etc.

i hadn't heard the live track.. and it was bloody amazing! any chance of upping an mp3 of it in non-mixed form? would be exceedingly grateful!

and that particular comic interlude actually made me fall off my chair (someone did fall over, now i think about it. HA!)

8)

looking forward to the tracklisting..

Glad you liked it - care to take a guess at the year and venue? Can get it uploaded, but when you say non-mixed form assume you mean without the FX as well, though I could do both.

Glastonbury 1992 Festival CD sampler (In A Field Of Their Own), is that what it's off ? Haven't got a clue if it's rare or not.

No me neither...I didn't get it for the Spz track as was before I got into them, I'm just hoping I bought it for the great Carter USM rare, decent live recording and not for the Leveller's number, as used to be quite a big fan of both.

I only thought it might be rare as I've never noticed it on eBay.

Interestingly in the liner notes it adds that Jason Pierce and some other bloke did 'additional mixing and production', which maybe explains why it has the distinctive sound of Spz tunes of that era, rather than the more raw live feel I expected.

If anyone wants to swap something for a proper CD quality copy I'm happy to burn a clean version, as opposed to my sonically manipulated comp version, and could add the 93 live stuff from Let it Flow too if you like - always found it strange why at least some of that that wasn't on Complete Woks volume 1 :?:

Hold the drinks. Frank's only request is that everybody on this site gets to hear Roy Orbison's In Dreams. One of THE greatest songs of all time IMO. Didn't John Peel have an Orbison song played at his funeral ?. I'm convinced my Dad told me that he did and we were both surprised it wasn't In Dreams. In Dreams would have been perfect. RIP Peely.

I could be wrong, but I believe it was 'Running Scared'. He was renowned for being a sentimental old bugger and I think I remember reading in his awesome biography 'Margrave Of The Marshes' (if anyone knows what the title means please put me out of my misery, it sounds like a footballer's name but I know nothing about football) where his wife mentioned that if you heard the big 'O' coming from his room you knew he was in a sentimental mood, that song in particular.

...heading back to your town

Sounds worth recounting to me, even if no one fell over...I guess the thunderous conclusion to Shine a Light seemed quite fitting then.

Thanks for the nice words :D

oh, i am enjoying all the music.
it's taking me awhile to listen to it all.
i'm a little overwhelmed.
thanks to you all!
i like it when songs come on that are great and are a mystery.
like Laz's track 12, it's haunting me.
and is that hasil adkins on track 2?
bza i've just put on yours now.
and so far- a very good way to wake up.
(it's morning here)
bunnyben, wow, your musical taste is ALL over the place.
i can relate. ain't it grand?
i like it when songs come on that i haven't heard in a million years.
like Lloyd Cole and the Commotions! i was running down memory lane for that one.
and whoever is doing that version of This Train- i swoon.
and then those i could do without! like the first one- and several more!
oh, i just peeked at your listing- the spice gals, i see.
what is that come down easy from? "in 1986... "
the traveling wilburys will always have a place in my heart.
(oh- bza, this is awesome- a politicized "i will survive"!)
and i haven't even put Laz's 2nd one on yet.
mojo, i loved the one about the cats and dogs!
that shine a light is like a f*ing bulldozer.
i loved hearing 54-46.
and those first two sure are pretty.
still grooving to catmole's isaac hayes...
and jig's track 5 especially, among others.
harmonia, your comp has taken up residence in the car.
i look forward to driving.
i think i have a folkie-hippy-stuck in the past stance, in terms of what i usually listen to.
i need to get acquainted with some new music and this is helping me.
thanks guys.

Glad you are enjoying it Ariel.

Green Peppers is a Mr Jim McCulloch, former guitarist with the BMX Bandits and Soup Dragons. He's a friend of my brother and had been keeping a low profile for years before emerging with his gem of an album. He has a nice MySpace page where you can find out more.

Johnny Dowd was introduced to me by Mr. Willie B Carruthers when i went to visit him last year. The album its from is fantastic, but that one song just crawled under my skin and is now a real favourite. The lyrics are fantastic and its got quite an edge to it...

"I was drunk that niiiiiiiight... i was high as a kiiiiite!"

richard hawley was the gutairist in pulp (but we can forgive him for that). he then went on to be in the longpigs before embarking on a solo career in the roy obrbison/ scott walker/ ian mcculloch mode. i'll dig out one of his songs and use an upload prog to give you a taste. i think his voice is beautiful.

rosessta tharpe is great. i watched a jools holland dvd and johnny cash was interviewd and he said he love her and hank snow so being geeky i had to track down some of their stuff!

i'll sort out the hawley then pm you unless anyone else wants some?

you say the spice girls and britney like they're a shamful evil thing! they made my comp, i think both (loosly used term here) 'artists' make enjoyable pop songs and the day pop music stops being about enjoyment be it interlectual enjoyment or the inane type then it will be a sad day and i'll lock myself in the toilet in the dark and listen to earth 2 for the rest of my days!

ps- i like the way you used the 'opps' smiley for britney  i think we have a genius here 8)

oh, no- i own several madonna albums and.. LCD Soundsystem!
i saw duran duran twice. that's 4 durans!
i love enjoyable pop music. when you said awhile ago that you didn't enjoy "i'm so happy music" i was thinking "why not?"!
(i think you meant the beach boys fun-on-the-beach-type songs?)
i do dislike that spice girls song, but not because it's pop- just because i don't like it.

regarding britney- well, you got me there :D

Tee hee, cats & dogs...it's my own tribute to the Acoustic Mainlines tour - if you're not aquainted, LS Lowrey was an amazing artist who using mostly pencil line drawings that captured post-WW2 working class culture that was looked down on at the time, however the brilliance of his work was eventually recognised and so they built a beautiful arts centre named after him in Salford (basically Manchester - essentially 2 citys but I could never work out where the border was when driving round the place looking for gig venues with just an A-Z and crap directions, when I used to play in a band down there).

The 'matchstick men' label refers to his drawings, as if he could capture an expression or disposition in a person he saw no need to elaborate with any unneccesary features, though his complete body of work demonstrates a much wider artistic ability. However his ability to use minimal brush strokes in capturing the essance of the scenes he composed was, for me, his greatest artistic quality alongside his renowned ability to see great things in everyday, ordinary folks.

Glad you liked the bulldozing builder that was my own fx'd Shine a Light...when listening back I was sometimes unsure where my mojo kicked in on top of Spaceman's magic!

The 1st 2 are beautiful tunes, although I've a little self-interest in no 1 (debut album available on amazon or any decent record store, with a vinyl release as well as CD on Beggars!). The 2nd is from a band called Engineers who had a massive and loyal following before they were signed last year, but despite producing a blinding debut album (self titled) they seem to be burning slow commercially which is a shame, though they could well be the next generation Spiritualized if they keep the quality up!

Unfortunately the 2 most obscure artists on my comp split years ago and it was hard work just cleaning up their demos, but I still laugh when I hear Liz singing her self-penned lyric instructing listeners they 'could hang around here like David Ike, in fact you can do whatever you like...' could be one of the worst rhyme attempts in history, but she did used to write some good'uns too!

AOS3 were big in certain circles in their day (local band from my area) and played many blinding festival gigs I was lucky to get to see in retrospect, including a belter on our very own Town Moor. Unfortunately their recorded output was much more limited and the quality doesn't do them justice.

You can never get enough of 54-46 in my opinion - I just got a recent live recording where Mr Hibbert makes it a 9+ minute track. I still can't believe him live, when he's old enough to collect his pension but still needs to keep the mic 8" away, as his voice is as stong as ever...I said yeah, (I said yeah), listen what I say now...give it up mister!

Glad you liked them tracks.

She seems to be contradicting herself as there are now much more powerful tools that are also easier to use, to make a well thought out compilation...I find it had to sympathise with anyone trying to reminisce about the decline of the C90 casette tape. If you have good quality material the CD is a far more versatile medium to make the sort of compliations she romanticises about....if anyone thought my comp was not made with the sort of 'love' she describes please let me know.

That article exhibits the worst characteistics of posh writers who spoil what for me is the most reliable and interesting broadsheet paper available these days. I find the most unbiased news coverage in the FT but find it's main subject matter far too dull, and that's coing from a professional banker/financial services admin person.

If you really want to get annoyed then buy the Telegraph as it might just be an upmarket Express/Mail type paper but there always some good writing in their...just a shame it's done by half-wit Boris Johnson wannabees!

This rings true for me "They took all Sunday afternoon, crouched beside your tape player with pins and needles in your feet,
your finger hovering above the pause button and your mum hollering up the stairs that your tea's growing cold".
Yes, those were the days.
But I agree with you Mojo- it may take alot less time but is no less romantic!
Technology has killed alot of things but not the mix tape, in my opinion. I think it's even more fun now.

Definately more fun now for me - digital media is so much easier to manipulate effectively...you have a far greater degree of control and you can use a much wider variety of source material.

I can look back fondly on those day's when you used to hover over the pause button to get a clean rip of a song, but as times and technology move on, it is sometimes for the better - eg that dramatic Dolby (or DTX on some kit) tape-hiss cancelling effect that I generally avoided, whereas now there is much more effective and accesible kit to do that sort of job and more.

Thanks Sam - I need to compile all these tracklistings as there's so much new music I've got thanks to the comp swap. I've been trying to listen 'properly' to each comp rather than have it on as aural wallpaper, and have only managed to get halfway through your's before I got called away, but as far as exposure to new artists goes I have to admit I've been really impressed with everything I've listened to so far - thanks folks!

I'm still waiting for ro's and Moops's (though think we might have made a private arrangement for that swap due to his prior commitments) but have the rest queued up for another proper listen before I can make constructive and fair comments.

So far I've loved the chilled folky stuff on CatMole's and loved the jazzy stuff on Jig's - I really need to buy some music by this Ben Harper fellow!

Loved Bza's jumping mix of B-funk but need to listen again to get my head round the tunes themselves.

Ben - I still haven't listened to all of your 2 jam-packed discs but what I heard already I liked :D

Laz69 has been a musical education with just the Evie Sands track alone, but also I liked the Julian Cope number on disc 1 as sounded so different to the few songs of his I was already familiar with...doesn't Doggen have some history with him? I'm sure I read that somewhere :?: (BTW couldn't help but mail PK about that thing...so far no response!)

I loved the simpler 2 guitar output at the last Spz Sage gig (no disrespect to John Coxon!) and having listened to the boots of Acoustic Mainlines after the gigs I was lucky enough to see, I thought Doggen's use of the lush, unique textures of the fender rhodes was superb, if not sublime the way he integrated in the whole sound of these gigs, and would love to know why he was mixing the DI with a fender champ mic'd output...maybe that was what made his sound so special at those gigs - even in Edinburgh where I had a clear line of site for Jason (usually I never get to see him actually playing so clearly at Spz gigs) I found the lovely deep, rich textures that Jason produced blended so well with the rhodes I had to really pay attention to his fingering at some points to distinguash the 2 instruments, but I firmly believe the rhodes was a better accompanyment to his gorgeously straight acoustic guitar than a real piano would be as they are a nightmare to mic up and depending on the venue can produce some really harsh resonances depending on the actual venue's acoustic properties.

Thanks to everyone who sent me their comp, especially Jig and Bza as we were meant to exchange in Edinburgh but all the delays caused some probs....Jig, are the video stuff you posted what you showed me during the bar trip in the middle of the gig? I thought you'd got more footage but if your like me with a digi cam I can barely hold the damn thing straight/steady to get a decent clip!

There's ANOTHER Lynch connection in there too, not so easy to spot. Virtual pint to the first person to get it (it's not a trick question or anything).
13.Bill Doggett "Honky Tonk Pt.1" is The "Party" Music From Blue Velvet.

Either that or it's from Mullholland Drive.
Bang on Lindsay!!! It's the bit where Frank takes his 'neighbour' out for a joy ride to Ben the pimp/drug dealer's. What's it to be?
Hold the drinks. Frank's only request is that everybody on this site gets to hear Roy Orbison's In Dreams. One of THE greatest songs of all time IMO. Didn't John Peel have an Orbison song played at his funeral ?. I'm convinced my Dad told me that he did and we were both surprised it wasn't In Dreams. In Dreams would have been perfect. RIP Peely.
I could be wrong, but I believe it was 'Running Scared'. He was renowned for being a sentimental old bugger and I think I remember reading in his awesome biography 'Margrave Of The Marshes' (if anyone knows what the title means please put me out of my misery, it sounds like a footballer's name but I know nothing about football) where his wife mentioned that if you heard the big 'O' coming from his room you knew he was in a sentimental mood, that song in particular.
i watched blue velvet and it nearly ruined roy orbison for me. horrible film

I don't remember sending one to anyone to 'Spaceman 3' and certainly don't recall recieving one. Only one person I sent one to who I've not got, but I knew that was happening...would have to check my PM's if it's not deleted to see who.

Out of all of them it's hard to choose a favourite - the best single track I heard was 'O Children' by Nick Cave, I'd never knowingly heard that song before or any material in quite that vein by him (not that I'd heard much considering his prodigious output) and I really liked the chilled out folky vibe of CatMole's comp - was surprised by the tracklisting as had barely heard of any of the artists despite it having a familiar sound in many of the tracks, so that's some stuff I can explore in the future.

Laz69's was a good musical education, ro's was interesting and enjoyable to listen to, especially as I don't think I know a single artist on that tracklisting. Bza had a nice upbeat vibe and I liked the bold mixing style.

If I had to choose a fav, right now it would be Jig's as I love the way the jazzy tunes build to the trippy beats - nice selection ordered to superb effect, with a couple of new artists I've been inspired to seek out. Whilst it's always good to hear folks you don't know (even so you can decide you don't like them!) it was great to hear Portishead again - Dummy etc was one of those albums I played to death when they were really big, and so did lots of mates, hence it became overplayed. However their live NYC album must rank up their with The Smiths (all puns intended) and Entreat (The Cure) for amazing quality of the production of the live sound...better than FUI? That's a question for another day methinks!

I actually have a new comp I did for a swap with a very generous person on here who had something I really wanted - can run of another to swap if like?

Yes it was Ben Harper - I couldn't honestly say I'd heard his name before, although a friend says he's quite a popular chap and so I probably should have...anyhows he's going to lend me some of his stuff as there's quite a choice of albums to buy.

The other one is track 3 - I think I remember taking a wild guess at who it was and you said I was in the right genre...will have to have a look for some of their stuff.

Also I'm on the hunt now for the Portishead live album as remember back in the day enjoying that one quite a lot. It's weird when you used to listen to one band who seemed to have hit the musical zeitgeist, yet basically listened to them to death mostly post-club late nights/early mornings.

Thanks to all for their comps in this round of swaps - seems an ideal way of getting some exposure to new music...cause the music press don't seem much help these days, although myspace seems good as long as you can be bothered to filter out the bland/crap etc.

Thanks to all for their comps in this round of swaps - seems an ideal way of getting some exposure to new music...cause the music press don't seem much help these days, although myspace seems good as long as you can be bothered to filter out the bland/crap etc.

It's difficult to suggest a starting point with Ben Harper, every album is worth a listen and certainly check out the stuff he did with The Blind Boys of Alabama. Of his studio stuff ''The Will To Live'' is my favourite at the moment. All the DVD's are recommended as well. And if you ever see he's on a tour over here and you think you could make it, get the ticket, he's great Live.

I've got both the CD and DVD of that Portishead album and the DVD is stunning. Have you got the album by Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man ? Her voice is brilliant even though she likes the odd packet of smokes.

That track 3 you mention, did i tell you i took it from a fantastic 6 disc Polish Boxset i got ? There is some really wonderful stuff on that, from the 1950's straight through to now basically. I paid well over 200 Zloty's for it but it was worth it.

Yeah i can do another swap if you want. You'll have to wait a while yet as i've only started picking some tunes so far. All i know is it will be quite different to the last one, i think that's my intention anyway but things can easily change with me.

That's such a great record, that one. I caught the opening track "Mysteries" during the closing credits of the film Russian Dolls, and was hooked from then on. Kind of like if Portishead decided to do a Shirley Bassey and Simon & Garfunkle mashup tribute album. Or something like that.
