gospel music
i was listening to 'shine jesus shine' on my walkman n was thinking how much better it woyld be if they took away the church pomp and striped it down, as oh happy day.
can you think of any others you'd like this done to? any thoughts?

Re: gospel music
Hey Shonn (the artist formerly known as a beautiful noisette), this can be whatever you want. I know next to zilch about gospel ('cept the 1 Mahalia album and knowledge of about 3 or 4 trad spiritual songs).
Ben, what's your knowledge of gospel. I have heard a few "work-songs" on Terry Callier albums that are beautiful but not sure how to go about finding more.
I can only speak about the services that i've attended but I agree that they are a million miles away from the emotional expression of gospel. I perhaps think that in the UK people are slightly reserved or still suffer from that stiff upper lip or "i'm not letting go" thingy. Anyway, i think i've went off your original train of thought.
All the best

Re: gospel music
I just got this Numero Group comp called Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal and it is fucking genius. All great funky/soul songs from 70s gospel groups. I highly recommend it - and pretty much any other compilation in the Numero catalog. It's all fucking gold.
Re: gospel music
well i went to church for most of my young life which meant that i was (unfortunatly) well versed in bland christan music. it was only the discovery of the likes of the staple singers, sister rossetta tharpe, old plantation style gospel songs that opened my eyes to the possibilites of what can be done. Ro has a wide knowledge of gospel, much ,uch wider than mine so i'd ask her for some advice as i'm sure she will not disapoint!eleKtroniK:musiK wrote:Hey Shonn (the artist formerly known as a beautiful noisette), this can be whatever you want. Re: gospel music
i've mentioned a particular album here before when it comes to gospel, so i'll recommend it again:
Washington Phillips - Key to the Kingdom.
i would give up all the gospel albums i own (well, except my staple singer 45's, of course!). this album is, it's uhm, well it, ALRIGHT I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. but it brings me to a place where nothing hurts and i truely feel absolved. it has to be that voice of his. i BELIEVE what he speaks.
also if we are gonna speak of gospel, i'm gonna drop a few blues guys that did some fantastic spirituals:
mississippi john hurt - nearer my god to thee, since i've laid my burden down, oh mary don't you weep, here i am oh lord send me, what a friend we have in jesus.
skip "nehemiah" james - jesus is a mighty good leader, i want to be more like jesus, let my jesus lead you.
reverend gary davis - samson and delilah, lord i wish i could see, i saw the light,

Re: gospel music
sorry, i wasn't done yet!
reverend charlie jackson - (some of you in the know should recognize this one from jason's dj set) god's got it, wrapped and tangled up in jesus.
blind willie johnson - i'm gonna run to the city of refuge, let your light shine on, jesus make up my dying bed, bye and bye i'm going to see the king.
well hopefully that will turn some of you onto the spiritual blues.
me.

Re: gospel music
wow, Ben, I wish that was the case!
Maceo Woods has been recommended to me
http://staxrecords.free.fr/GTLPlist.htm
but I haven't heard him yet.
Document Records is amazing
http://www.document-records.com/
Thanks to you guys I learned about the truly wonderful Washington Phillips record Shonn is going on about, and also the Staple Singers, who I'd never listened to till lately.
I think the best Gospel I ever heard was that Jimmie & Vella track that Mr Jig supplied on his comp. "Lord, Abide With Me"
um.. I like it when Mahalia Jackson says, "Little Bittle Babies"
this is a terrific compilation
http://cd.ciao.co.uk/Get_Right_With_God ... s__5891864
***Edwin Hawkins Singers /Let Us Go into The House of the Lord ***
their version of Oh Happy Day ... well, it's just marvelous.
this is pretty neat
http://www.printedculture.com/geesbend/history.html
they sell a cd called "How we Got Over" in their online shop, half recorded in the 40's and half from a few years ago.
toomilk, that comp sounds great..

and arhoolie
http://www.arhoolie.com/catalog/gospel.html
try the Sacred Steel!
it's less to my taste than vocal stuff but it's good for a toe-tapping time.
and I bet that Overstreet one is great.
http://www.arhoolie.com/titles/442.shtml
oh yeah, and meant to say... the Sacred Steel is really blues-y.
interesting.

Re: gospel music
Thought I'd lump this little gem of a find at Christmas in here;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vee-Jay-Records ... B00009YWAU
Picked this up in Borders before Christmas for 10 quid.
Lovely mix of r&b, r&r, blues, gospel, doo-wop and (i guess) early soul.
Cheers
