Wooden Shjips European tour in July. Decent support band apparently (cough).

Say Rob - this Urthona. Where did you buy it from?

For me the incredible Nightfeeders 12" by Nudity is fucking amazing. Neu-esque Krautrock fuzz guitar spectacular. Really spectacular. Two 21+ minute mixes.

I bought The Bends (yes!). It's OK too.

Early Years EPs - incredible b-sides. Glorious. Not really an album though.

BJM - My Bloody Underground. Some great drone tracks but a touch confusing at times.

Magic Lantern. Not bought as they do crazy shit like release 30 only copies on cassette. Bonkers. But great music. No albums available so it probably doesn't count.

(cheers to my man Dave for most of this stuiff)

Just today the Spectrum Meets Captain Memphis album drops through the door. Can't recommend highly enough. Just listened to the whole album twice and immediately Hey Man stands out as a brilliant version. A must buy and after my initial fears of this year being dull and un-inspiring it could be the best for years. Ordered only last week and God bless the exchange rate and as always Birdman records!!!!

Thanks

Didn't buy these, they were gifts from a friend with amazing taste. So these are the last five cds that I've 'obtained'.

Comus-First Utterance (I love this,absolutely fucking amazing!)

Ray Russel -live at the ICA 1971

COB -Moyshe McStiff and the Tartan Lancers of the Sacred Heart

Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution

Ai Aso- Camomile Pool (very beautiful, I think a lot of Spz fans would probably like this, it's dreamy stuff).

Right on! Both are wonderful slabs of rare English psychedelic folk. The Comus album is downright terrifying!

3 EP's released by Vincent Oliver on the Loaf Label (offshoot of Lo Recordings)
D.I.Y bedroom knock-ups with nods to mbv/pygmy era slowdive with low in the mix eleKtroniKa-Ka-Ka thrown in.
It's pop music but without the offensiveness.
Nowt spectacular but useful for a late night drive...

:D

I'm glad you feel the same! I have not been able to stop listening to this- it's become an instant addition to my 'obsessed with' pile.

My short trip to Rough Trade for the Spz writsband unfortunately ended in a tiny bit of shopping :? I had sworn I was NOT going to buy ANYTHING. Unfortunately I was a teeny, weeny bit early and just during my ever so brief wait at the counter (I resisted going down any ailes) I saw two new cds I HAD to buy. The new Karen Dalton cd and Pete Molinari. The man behind the counter took mercy on me and gave me a wristband before the clock had struck midday so that I would not turn into a ... (person who maxes out their credit card whilst waiting in line)

I was pleasantly surprised to find this on a shelf in my local bookshop 2 days ago so remembering i had a gift token went back in today and picked it up, looks good alright. Also liked the fact that i opened it at a random page and it mentioned the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" which Sunny had mentioned earlier in another thread, kinda wish i'd been tripping for that cosmic coincidence!

Thanks.

Wounded Knees - Great 10'. Makes you feel why EP's are essential. Great guitar bliss-out with J Mascis and worth every penny. Sounds brilliant and great indie rock n roll!
J Spaceman - Finally arrived the gatefold vinyl of Mr Lonely. All the usual frustrations of a 'soundtrack' album but anyone in love with the Harmony tracks on the new album will adore.
Liquorball - Great recommendation from another site and close to blissed out, pure rock n roll you might hear. Great hand-painted sleeve and essential to all lovers of fucked up guitar.
SinnerDC - great Sonic re-mic & EAR song. Trippy and close to outer limits! Enjoy.
Sian Alice Grop - 59:59 - really enyoying this album. Mentioned before and again great music to lose youself! Real late music as you walk forever drifting....

Thanks

I had the (mis)fortune of walking past a record shop in Cork on my way to the gig (BRMC) a few days ago and blowing all my money for the weekend in 5 minutes. I emerged with these cd's (I fled the scene when I was told there was Vinyl upstairs);

Valeries Week of Wonders (anyone seen this film?)
The Fuckbuttons
Josef Van Wissem (lute)
La Monde Fableux des Yamasuki (unfortunately too 'novelty' for my taste)
Scott Walker- The Drift (because I just HAD to listen to it there and then, so now I have two copies)

Been a long time since I posted anything on this topic but then again I haven't bought that much at all. That said what I have bought has excited me, so here they are...

1) Beefheart - Mirror Man
2) Beefheart - Dust Sucker
3) Santana - Abraxas
4) Junior Kimbrough - Most Things Haven't Worked Out
5) Comets On Fire _ Avatar

Alright Sunny, what did you think of them?

I heard them fresh a few weeks back on a particularly unhinged friday night - well impressed and I can also confirm they sound great through just the one speaker!!

(thanks Orbital )

Like Mustard above i've also been digging some Captain Beefheart, 'Unconditionally Guaranteed', which is totally new to me. This album - according to the sleevenotes - has been crtitically panned since day one and it just shows the reviewer bastards have no ears. Its a great album! It's as polished as 'Clear Spot', melodic and blues style, but with the Magic Band funk going on all over it. Its only half an hour long but its all good. Some great singing from the man.

Gang Starr 'Hard to earn' - a classic from 1994 getting a well-earned listen again. 'Code Of The Streets' 8)
Martina Topley Bird - 'The Blue God' - is well chilled out. On initial listen it doesen't have the big variance in different styles and guest players as on 'Quixotic', more a less-is-more uniform production. Her voice is as perfect as ever right enough. What a voice!

More Dirty Laundry - another collection oustanding unknown classics, straight through country soul. Some great stuff on here, a lot of totally unfamiliar names, Arthur Alexander - amazing! Who is he??

Goldfrapp vs Spiritualized 'Monster Love' - I found the Cd single for this, proper headspin psychedelica! One for the long summer days I think. Its like a Pure Phase tune! :D

Yep I'm liking the Fuckbuttons. not as much as Captain Beefheart but...

I've said this here before but Martina is one of my favourite British Singers.

Gang Starr- cool! A friend of mine worked with Guru at one point, had loads of good things to say about his personality.

Black Angels-'Directions to see a ghost'.

Great new album, which picks up where the first one left off. This 2nd LP is fuller in sound than the first one with more instrumentation added to their "Native American drone-n-roll" repertoir. Also, it is definitely darker (lyrically and conceptually) than the first one. More comparisons can also be made with the 13th Floor Elevators. In fact, I think I even hear a jug in one of their new songs.

Great band...looking forward to catching them in Portland on June 9th.

I went out earlier to get that new CD by the Black Angels but my local record store had sold out (been told it'll be back in on Tuesday though). Is it any good? Like what I heard on their website. Ended up buying Homesongs by Adem (has anyone bought his new CD yet...the one of his interpretations of 90's songs?) and the Wooden Shjips CD which I've got on now...sounds amazing. Also got tickets for their joint gig with The Heads along with tickets for The Dirtbombs....both in Brighton which well I'm pleased about (no running for the last train back from London which I normally have to deal with).

Only other notable recent purchases that I can think of are Magnificent Fiend by Howlin' Rain and In The Future by Black Mountain which are both ace. Really looking forward to seeing both of those at this year's Greenman...along with the Spaceman himself of course.

Jamie Lidell - Jim

Which is a grow(l)er. What a voice...took me a while as I kind like the Super_colider stuff more but these sunshine tunes are splendid.

Tape - Luminarium

Stunning. There best release to date with many of there signature sounds being pulled together to form something....erm sensible.

Scientist & Prince Jammy - DC Dub Connection

My knowledge of propa dub is nil ('cept from snippets courtesy of mark lamarr) but this is satisfying.

Anyway, the core purchases have been from Stockholm Ltd which is broadly termed as a minimal label. To me it's all beats in motion; Par Grindvik is the main player....lurvely.

Songs in A & E - Spiritualized (same as everyone else I guess)

The Nightfeeders - Nudity
Easily the best thing I've bought all year. Two 20+ minutes mixes of one track, full blown tripped out krautrock psych.

Smile - Boris.
Fuck me this heavy. Japan power punk/metal ear shredder.

Divan - Oedipussy
Unsung classic from ex Perfect Disaster man Phil Parfitt. Features Jason playing guitar on one track.

The Sound of Young America - The Voices
Cardif trio making Loop/Spacemenish shoegaze. Sublime.

Nevermind the gash holding the two top places  What are the Burzum albums like...I had a thing (very short lived) for exploring the black ambient/metal genre and clearly forgot about it. Have heard a few tracks but all the info kinda got tied up in the "he shot the guitarist".

Keen to hear your thoughts and anyone elses on some dark ambient...veiko, i have a feeling you'd be clued.

Also on AJM as well...did you get the booklet CD or were they all released as a booklet?

There isn't a fifth one. And you shouldn't buy any of them; apart from the Dinosaur one, they're rubbush.
White2 is great - you just need to listen to it very loud through capable speakers.

Is it in the same vein as Pink or is it more droney? I can't decide whether to get it or not.
It's like Pink in many places so if you like that you'll enjoy it I reckon. Some of it is really fast but there are some drone tracks too.
Which version did you get? According to the Southern Lord site there are two different mixes available.

<<<Boris-"Smile" CD+DVD (special 2 disc set LTD. edition mailorder version)

The Southern Lord version is drastically different than the version of Smile released by Daymare records in Japan. The main difference between the Southern Lord version and the Daymare version is the mix of the actual songs themselves. Where the songs on the Japanese version have a more electronic or noisy-psychedelic vibe, the North American/European version here features a heavier more straight-forward rock aesthetic. >>> I'd be interested in comparing the two.
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

I have a single CD and I'm sure its on Southern Lord. No way does it sound electronic, it has the classic Boris growling guitar. You know the first big chord on Farewell on Pink (probably the biggest ever guitar chord I have heard in my life)? Quite a bit of Smile has that sort of sound too.

Still can't get into Sun O))). Nothing happens as far as I can see.

That's part of the 'beauty' of it. Unless of course it's just one big joke that I've been sucked into

We-ell... I did hear some musicians who were 'in the know', who had met the apparently very nice chaps in Sun O))), say the band themselves do find the whole thing a bit of a joke and there is some piss taking involved. Having said that I doubt a respected act like Boris would collaborate with people who don't take the music seriously.

I don't get Earth either although I've tried quite hard. Again too little goes on for me - hence my appreciation of the fast punk style of Boris as opposed to the slow rumbling alternative.

I'm kinda the same here... i have the Boris & Sun O))) album from last year/year before and its brilliant... some great tracks and glad to see the guy from Jessamine in there too, but i too have found Sun O))) and earlier Earth albums difficult listening. The most recent Earth album is more listenable (i'm sure others here have said similar things) and pretty good, but the other stuff i just get really bored with really quickly... good ideas, just not my cup of tea... :?

I remember seeing Sun O))) at an ATP once. Pretty sure it was them. I was thoroughly thoroughly impressed by them and loved every moment - i knew i'd never buy an album though, i can't really see the point for that kind of music?

Heard a lot about Boris in all the right places but not delved yet. Probably will sometime.

For you Mr. R - here's a treat and taster. For everyone else... there's heavy and then there's Boris. Only 3 people responsible and (vaguely sexist remark coming) all that ridiculous guitar is played by an innocent looking woman. Incredible.

The Voices are excellent.. The first album sports (at least) a blatant rip-off of almost Spacemenesque proportions - "Take The Pain Away" = "Lord Can You Hear Me".. great band.

Hercules and Love Affair - S/T LP
Hercules and Love Affair - Blind maxi single...Frankie Knuckles Dub mix being stand-out
Hercules and Love Affair - Classique #2

Got a bit of a thing for this sound at the minute...hegarty' voice and a discoid rhythmn...sweet!

Uusitalo - Tulenkantaja

One that's been near the top of the list for too long...delicious micronic lava

The Black Kids - Hurricane Jane single

Just works...feeling the line;

"'It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody.
Oh, what's the use of making a bed?
I took something and it feels like karate;
it's kicked me down and left me for dead."

Anyway...gone all pop this week

don't know if i can throw in a sensible coin, but isn't it with bands like Sun O))) and Boris a word "fake" very in the centre. not like with The Heads. but being an own critic, how much do you expect from music and then the musicians see that you expect way too much and then the pissing comes along. so - is it original or contemporary, or is this last word going to be forbidden on this board. don't know, just listen. matter of fact, try it in a very strange ways. try listen Boris after a good sauna, or maybe on a way to a fishing trip. just turn your head.

ohhh how on earth have the japanese been obsessed with western culture, even more with pop culture (read "I want it", how many times have You seed it within this week? no doubts, japs say it triple as much as you do). living on island makes you respect your own shit even if it's a full of direct reference to your idols.

If you like Boris, then you check out Growing.

they've been supporting Boris on their European tour. totally amazing guitar generated music that, these days, reminds me a little of the Kompact Ambient Pop records.
their earlier stuff was kind of like the sunny, happy opposite of Sunn0)))) (although they'll hate me for saying that) all though made by 2 dudes with SGs and pedals and sequencers and it sounds like a million computers and a million animals making out on mushrooms under a Disney sunset.

(woah. what did i do there?)

these days, they're on the Social Registry (also home of Sian Alice Group).
actually, you couldn't do much worse than checking pretty much everything on that label...

Douglas Armour's record is sheer pop beauty
Mike Bones, presently playing guitar in SAG, comes off a little like Townes Van Zandt if he lived on the lower east side in 2008 and was from New Jersey.
Blood On The Wall are pure early 90s indie rock pop megastars.
Gang Gang Dance is just plain good.
and Pyschic Ills have the best name ever and make improv trance noise, a little like Loop with the grooves. They're from Austin, Texas and are good friends with the Black Angels.

Ben, what did you think of your sound in Belfast at the Mandella Hall?

My girlfriend and I were wondering whether you were happy with it most of the time. You seemed a bit miffed with it.

i was a little miffed yeah!
it didn't sound quite right on stage and i'm not quite sure why.

what were your thoughts about it Fuzzhead? is this a common problem with Mandela Hall?

everything else was great in Belfast (great city and great people) but the sound on stage was a little weird!

We arrived about 2-3 songs into your set - and at first I thought the sound was really loud. I was really into it. Then it seemed to be riddled with distortion and feedback for parts which spolit it for me. We were standing at the mixing desk when you were on stage and there was a lot of fussing going on with the engineers.

I've always thought the sound was very good in the Mandella Hall. Never had any complaints about it. After the Ulster Hall (which is being refurbished) and possibly the Empire, it's my next favourite venue in Belfast.

Did Jason & the band say anything about their sound? I thought it was perfect. Loud as hell and Doggen sounded on fire. The strobes were impressive too.

Glad you enjoyed Belfast, Ben. It's a fine city.

Would be interested to hear how Flying Lotus and Leila turn out. I've though Warp have gone off the boil for a while now but then heard the Leila single recently and thought it was awesome! As a result, I've got Leila's 10" supposedly in the post at the mo, (although i've a horrible feeling it's more "lost" in the post than "actually" in the post).

Would also be interested to hear how Tricky's new offering turns out. He keeps getting good reviews but everything since PMT has been a bit uninspiring for me.

Flying Lotus' work is fairly new to me and can only really compare it to the Reset EP. I really like it; it's very layered and hence even after a gazumpteenth listen there is always something new there. He keeps his tracks short...so no long unecessary noodlings and some of the vox/vox samples on LA are sweet. Especially Camel, Roberta Flack and Auntie's Lock Infinitum. The only disapointment for me is having to hit repeat so often...there is one track that sticks out time-after-time Riot...which sounds like how Missy Elliot would've wanted "get you freak on!"...shame she had no nuts.

I've just taken Leila on her past work (XL & Rephlex) and again she's fairly new to me. I've had a listen to Mettle and Deflect...glad to see from the first single release on Warp she aint ditched Luca. I'm convinced it'l be something super...it had a real nice review in this month's wire...something along the lines of victorian childs pop seen reproduced through the medium of electronics...i don't remember...it'l be good, that's for sure.

I actually never bothered with Tricky after Maxinquaye...headed off in another direction so have only just returned...I like him. I'll post a few lines when it arrives.

I'm just having a gander back through the Warp vaults and agree I got a bit confused about there direction at the start of 2000...this was possibly the branching out phase...away from just an IDM label to an everything label. To me they rank up high along with Ghostly/Spectral & Soma in that area...

You'd like the Tadd Mullinix stuff too if you're a fan of Lotus...he's Dabrye among other names.

Yeah, i read that review - something to do with fairy tales and truly understanding their power and myth. Or something . . gawd bless The Wire.

I like multilayered. Will have to check it out.

Yesss, that's more like what I meant...too many words in the Wire sometimes...i also tend to skip reading anything with a picture including a trumpet.

I popped in the Rob da Bank/A-Z of Jason Spierceman thread a note to say that Flying Lotus will be on there next...erm tonight/last night/this morning (fuck knows!)...as well as the shoegaze special with Nat from Sonic Cathedral...surpirsed he/they aint informed us. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/robdabank/

Heard any Outputmessage, ebbsandflows? Another gentler textural one on the meldoic label. If you're into snippets and things pm me and i'll do you a quick ten comp(ilation).

Cheers
