The Star Fields - SOS album review

Post by mojo filters »

I just read a review of this band's eponymous album in March's Sound On Sound. What struck me first and caused me to start this thread was the fact that the reviewer found cause to mention Spacemen 3 9 times in a quarter-space, single column!

It's not a name I'm familiar with, however the review is generally positive and goes to significant length to suggest that fans of Spacemen 3 would also like this album (the aforementioned band's name being used 9 times being a pretty blunt indicator). I was unfortunately unable to listen to the tracks on their MySpace site for some technical reason, hopefully others will have more success:

I'm interested as to if others here know this act, and what they think of the music...
I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

Saw The Star Fields back in February playing 3rd on the bill with Balaclava Kid & Dad and Negative Pegasus here in Norwich at the Arts Centre. Very enjoyable and for me was the highlight of the evening, especially as I had no knowledge of them (him) before. As the SoS review mentions, very Spacemen 3 influenced. There's a youtube clip of a track from that gig here, although the sound doesn't do it justice as I remember his vocals being lower in the mix and the guitar much louder:

It's actually one guy, Jay Holliday who is local to the area and used to play in a band called Hypnotize a good few years back. I spoke with him briefly after the gig, very nice chap. Aside from Spacemen there's a fondness for Loop and Telescopes also. He's just started being a bit more active again which I guess explains the SoS review - I have a copy of that album which a friend happened upon in the 'local artists' section of one of our local record shops and it's actually from 2011. I like it, derivative but some nice guitar, drones, feedback, synth noise, loops etc. Not going to set the world on fire but I put it on fairly often.
