I saw Slowdive last night and it was mind-blowing. Best show I've seen by them since the reunion. They played two songs from the new album that they didn't play last time (Everyone Knows and Don't Know Why). They also did a fantastic version of Dagger.
maybe I was being a bit harsh. the Slowdive reunion has also been fantastic (and I would probably say that their new album is the better of the two, if perhaps a bit samey) but I would still say their setlists haven't been quite as rich and varied- where's all the Just For A Day stuff? whereas Ride have been mixing up and having deep cuts in there.

Ride have a history of turning their setlist over regularly and often played unreleased material the first time around. On the other hand I first saw Slowdive in 1991 in Reading where they played a 7 song set. By 1993 and two LPs and a bunch of singles later they were still playing 5 out of those 7 songs in a 10 song set if my memory is not completely shot. In Liverpool just before the release of the new LP they played 8 of the tunes from the 1993 set including the 5 tunes from the 1991 set. They are great live, but more variety would be a good thing.

I'll probably only go and see Slowdive again if the set changes up a bit.
the two bands do pretty much have the same amount of back catalogue to play (Tarantula has wisely been erased from history)

playing devil's advocate, I do imagine it's trickier for Slowdive to work up new songs for the set- because of all the very specific guitar effects and the nuances around that. whereas I think Ride are more of a traditional rock band (who were only really shoegaze on the first album) who can get it tight, crank it up, and away you go

I see Mercury Rev are doing some `acoustic and intimate shows` playing the whole Deserter`s Songs album as well. I must I`m underwhelmed at the idea of bands renowned for noise an volume doing these type of shows, :?

The Ride acoustic show is already sold out. My wife is gutted. Hopefully we can pick up a couple of tickets somewhere.

I only latched onto The Rev when they first released Deserters Songs, would loved to have heard/seen some of the early incarnations chaos.
That said Deserters Songs would work well in such intimate surroundings, a lovely record it has to be said.
They have produced great moments on all subsequent records but never for a full album, too much filler
Live shows usually remain excellent though

lucky you :)
with Pete Fij & Terry Bickers as support too!

on the subject of noisy bands unplugging- I think it can work quite well and show that they have solid songs underneath all the layers. I must say that it's probably good as a novelty for Ride, but such a big part of their sound is all the distortion and Loz's superb drumming- I wouldn't want them to make a habit of it!

I really like this new EP. Cold Water People is great. The falsetto vocal on Keep It Surreal is a little strange and unexpected, but it works.

I should have it in hand within a day or two. I'll report back. I did hear the Cavern of Anti-Matter remix ("Lateral Alice," I think) and liked that.

The remix album is great. I really dig it. If you can score a copy for under $30, go for it. There's an amazing remix of "Cali" by Luke Abbot. Cavern of Anti-Matter's remix of "Lateral Alice" rules. Side B is an ambient suite of "Home Is A Feeling".

I see, from FB, that Ride have recorded a new long player and will be releasing soon! Good to see that they are not standing still. Looking forward to hearing some of the new stuff.

yep good to know they are not standing still, they seem to move pretty fast and tour a fair amount too. seen them 7 times since they reformed!

I hope the new record is better than that EP they did, that was really naff (you can really tell it was offcuts from Weather Diaries!) the new song they played at the acoustic show was good though.

did anyone get the 'April Fools' email that came to the mailing list. apparently someone actually hacked in and did it- it was brutal. taking the piss out of Beady Eye, Marks solo career etc. I think that's why they have released this news, to cheer fans up!

Anyone heard GLOK 'Dissident'? It's an instrumental solo album from Andy Bell and quite good it is too!

First half is full of mellow dancefloor friendly vibes on a cosmic disco / balearic trip, while the second half oddly reminds me of the Beta Band at times. Some of those same tunes could actually be Ride songs with a little tweaking.
I think a number of folks here would dig this (Modlab, TheWarmth and niamhm immediately spring to mind).

Astronauts report it feels good.

Thanks for the heads up on that- to be honest I didn't feel that much motivation to check out the Glok stuff, I didn't feel hopeful that it would be that great, but will look into it.

Hope it's not the situation where people's side projects are much more interesting than the main gig..

Not long till the new album now.. reviews seem to be fairly positive. I heard another new track (Repetition) which I have to say I didn't care for at all. the reviews were mentioning some pretty good reference points for the tracks we haven't heard yet, so I remain hopeful

The Glok album is great. I bought it on cassette, even though I don't have a player, just because I wanted to support Andy and have a physical copy. The a month later they announce vinyl! Grrrr. Anyway, awesome album. Recommended.

The new Ride single, "Clouds of Saint Marie," is excellent, too. Looking forward to the album this Friday.

'Clouds of Saint Marie' didn't really do much for me I'm afraid, they seem to be bringing out their inner jangly indie kid on some of these songs, but this one wasn't as convincing as Future Love at all.

Got to say I`m liking this latest track, heard it a few times now and its vintage Ride, proper Ride rhythm section and melodies, need to crank it up a bit I think.
I see what you mean by inner indie jangle but it just has me thinking of Twisterella and I always liked that so I`m sold on it,

Update, had a few listens now to the full album, think I need a few more, 2nd half seems to sag a bit under one or two too many mid paced tracks that may or may not grow on me, I like the tracks I`d heard before and a few others but if you didn`t like the last album I don`t think this one will smoke your boat either

There were a lot of blokes of 'a certain age' buying the new Ride LP in Probe today. I didn't bother because I thought the last one was absolutely duff. I'll give this one a few plays on TIDAL before I decide to buy it.

Had a first listen to the album, have to say it didn't do much for me. Still could be a grower however, I at least owe them a few more listens (one of my fave bands after all).

Part of the problem is the production, I hope they change producer next time and get some grit back. and some oomph in Loz's drums. Weather Diaries had the same issue but had some really good songs (Olan, if you didn't like that I can't see this floating your boat)

Respect them for changing up their sound but we are a long way from shoegaze now..

There was one track which sounded like a cleaner Sonic Youth, I liked that. Enjoyed the final track too (had a nice atmospheric build up). And I still dig Future Love (nothing wrong with a jangly indie song if the songwriting is good enough-Twisterella is a fine song for example). So not all bad news. But the songs just seemed undeveloped and all with a bit of an 80s sheen.
I read an interview with Andy and he said this album came really fast and the next album will possibly be 'weightier' - that kinda makes sense

Its a solid 7/10 for me, Yeah the Sonic Youth one, is that 15 minutes ? Its Ok, some good noisy bits on the album that will come over far better live and without that nonsense producer at the helm.
Jump Jet is my favourite track and that will be superb live also Eternal Recurrence is pretty shoegazey which is all good. 2 songs on it are just filler and quite frankly need not have been on there.
I think the indie style singles (Future Love and Clouds of Saint Marie) will sound pretty god live.
I'm watching them in Koln at a 400 capacity venue 2 days after my birthday in January, tempted with Hamburg the night after.

okay so I listened a bit more and the album has grown on me.. a bit. 15 Minutes is indeed the Sonic Youth one, the lyrics aren't great on that one however (never their strong point).
Eternal Recurrence and Kill Switch are pretty good too.
as said above I do think it takes a slump in the second half.
still a 5/10 or 6/10 at this stage for me.

They did a signing in Resident Records yesterday. You had to pre-order the album to get a ticket into it. Even as a massive Ride fan I can't say I was that tempted. Not sure if that's a reflection on the new material or the fact I'm getting old and it was a Monday night
