Top 10 Spiritualized Songs

Post by nghst »

I found this take on what are the best Spiritualized songs: https://www.classicrockhistory.com/top- ... zed-songs/

Here's my own, but I'll just list my favorite from each album.

Smiles - Short and sweet, but I did love the 12 minute version from Sydney 2012
Slide Song - It's about trying to get better, but struggling along the way
Come Together - A deeper and darker take on the Beatles Come Together
Anything More - "Though my body gets old my mind does it no favors at all", but "We'll still have a real good Life"
Cheapster - Love the energy and volume of this one, laying it all on the line
You Lie You Cheat - Another high energy song about getting to a better place through a bunch of shit
So Long You Pretty Thing - I love that Poppy wrote the first part of this song. It shows you don't have to be old to add valuable insights on our existence
The Prize - Is love the Prize?
I'm Coming Home Again - "And you cannot be bound if you cannot be free" A lot of deep thoughts on this one and the music just keeps rolling on this 10 minute masterpiece

I guess Anyway You Want Me would then make it 10. This guy gives good reasoning for each song he picks, which I'm not great at.

Hmm. Angel Sigh, Shine A Light, Medication, Good Dope Good Fun, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, Cop Shoot Cop, Won't Get to Heaven, Hey Jane, I'm Coming Home Again, On the Sunshine, something like that? It hurts me to disrespect the songs that were a hair's breadth from the cut, so many are dear to me.

I used to claim that I wanted Cop Shoot Cop played at my funeral, but I also used to claim that I wanted my ashes served in guacamole at my funeral too, and it would only be revealed at the end that y'all had been eating me, so I'm not sure how serious my funeral wishes are.

My favourites change often, but I seem to have a pretty immuable set of core faves that make my heart & soul swell... One of the things I love the best about Spiritualized is how the new, late-period albums keep reaching new highs and renewing my love for the band.

If I were with her now
Feel so sad (Rhapsodies) - possibly my top 1
Spread your wings
All of my thoughts
Home of the brave
Don't just do something - no wait, that's my top 1. Well it has my top 1 coda, for sure
Won't get to heaven
Hey Jane - forget what I just said about Don't just do something; this one's got my top 1 coda
The morning after (fell deeply in love with this one during the incredible live shows...)
The mainline song (this song literally, single-handedly lifted me from a months-long period of despair)

It feels so wrong to not also include All of my tears, These blues (though I prefer the sublime S3 version on DJ Tones), and I'm coming home again!

Any top 10 that doesn't include Feel So Sad is factually wrong.

Maybe it was too obscure (not on an album and not as big a single as Anyway That You Want Me) that the guys who wrote the article didn't know/consider it.

My top 10 favorites kind of depend on the day, but I tend toward the more enveloping/cocoony-sounding songs.

Overall though, it's the killer blend of gorgeous sound (from delicate to crushing and back again), vulnerability, loneliness, shaky hubris, humility, wry wit, cynicism, love, lust, more vulnerability, yearning to be "better" but being inevitably dragged back down to earth by one's own dumb old humanity/extreme fallibility, etc., that keep me marveling at just how fucking fortunate we are to be alive at the same time Jason Pierce and his bandmates walk the earth.

With some it's the lyrics that get me, with others it's the sound and gut feel, and of course with some it's all of that. The live shows are up there among my favorite experiences ever.

Today my 10+ favorites are:
- You Know It's True
- Step Into The Breeze
- 200 Bars
- Shine a Light
- Let it Flow
- Lay Back in the Sun
- I Think I'm In Love
- All of My Thoughts
- Stay With Me
- Home of the Brave
- Do It All Over Again
- Stop Your Crying
- Medication - just love "I'm waiting for a time when I can be without these things that make me feel this way all of the time"
- The Straight and Narrow
- Don't Just Do Something
- Anyway That You Want Me (even though I want to write it "Any Way" 😁")
- Hey Jane
- A Perfect Miracle
- I'm Your Man
- Here It Comes (The Road) Let's Go
- The Morning After
- Feel So Sad
- Always Together With You
- Let It Bleed (For Iggy)
- The Mainline Song
- So Long, You Pretty Thing
- LAGWAFIS
- ...if you've got a lonely heart too...

- Come on baby, stop your crying

- Don't wanna live, but I can't resist

- I would rather add some life to my years
