I couldn't find the thread but someone had posted and mentioned an autobiography by Stuart Braithwaite ( founder ) of Mogwai. I'm halfway thru this novel and it is a good read. His earlier influences in music he noted the Cure, Jesus and Mary Chain, Iggy Pop and several mentions of Spacemen 3. Got my local library to get this and hasn't disappointed yet. If the rest of the book is good, I'll purchase it for my collection ...

Its a great read. I'm almost finished it but its been fun. Growing up only a few miles from where Stuart did, and having frequented much of the same places and attending a lot of the same gigs, this book has been a trip for me.

I am one of those people who generally waits for the paperback too! I don't need every book in oversized slab form, and the FOMO isn't usually bad enough to stop me waiting

I have the hardback, signed slipcase version. nearly finished it. Its a good/easy read, some funny passages in there, its a bit samey once they get their break, get wasted/play gigs wasted/do the album/ self proclaimed biggest gig they ever do, get wasted and repeat, just follows the same cycle. Its one thats hard to put down as you can relate to so many of the bands and characters in there. Miki's book was a far better written piece in my opinion. Still both worth having for sure.
Either Will from EATB or Gillespie next on the reading list

That's a great snapshot of Spaceships. I haven't read Fingers Crossed, but now I'm tempted, should be a pbk soon hopefully.
Bunnyman is excellent.. Will certainly didn't have a comfy start in life. There are amusing bits about McCullough ... in a friendly way. Hope he writes another

Finished the autobiography. First thing I noticed was the smaller font ( a little hard to read ). The early childhood memories are the gems like any other rock and roll novels. Once you get into the band the cliches' are their i.e. - drugs, sex, debauchery, etc. One of the things that stood out was that I didn't know Bobby Gillespie was an avid football fan ( Celtics ) and that he played a bit when he was younger with mates and a league.

" Caesar managed to get hold of Rob Gretton's telephone number. Rob was New Order's manager and he'd been Joy Division's manager too. He was also a director of Factory Records. We went to Manchester to see him, and I recall asking if he supported Manchester United. Rob peered at me drily over his large glasses with the retort, " Fuck off ! No one from Manchester supports United - I'm City, then he pushed his glasses back up into position from where they'd slipped. Classic Rob. " (pg.101) I thought this was funny. One of the first things you asked New Order's manager was football related.

When Bobby Gillespie first saw Spacemen 3 in concert, " Just before we got into acid house we went to see Spacemen 3. I heard their single, " Revolution " and I saw the video on Snub TV and thught it was great. They played at the Escape Blub in Brighton so we all went to see them. Now, my overriding memory of that show was loads of Spacemen fans just sat on the floor waiting for the band to come on, and when Spacemen 3 eventually started playing Jason and Sonic were both sitting n chairs as well. I'd read that these guys were Stooges and MC5 fanatics like ourselves, into high energy rock and roll.

Neverless a good read.
